Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2020-2954 affects Oracle PeopleSoft Enterprise HRMS Candidate Gateway 9.2. An unauthenticated web attacker could compromise HRMS data if they can induce another person to interact. The reported impact is limited confidentiality and integrity loss, including unauthorized read and data modification in accessible HRMS data.

Executive priority

Prioritize remediation for internet-facing recruiting or HR portals because the affected system may process sensitive applicant or employee data. This is not described as availability-impacting, but data read and modification risk makes it business-relevant.

Technical view

Oracle describes a network-exploitable HTTP vulnerability in PeopleSoft Enterprise HRMS Candidate Gateway 9.2. It requires no privileges, low attack complexity, and user interaction. CVSS is 6.1 with changed scope, low confidentiality impact, low integrity impact, and no availability impact.

Likely exposure

Exposure is most likely where PeopleSoft Candidate Gateway 9.2 is reachable over HTTP or HTTPS, especially external recruiting portals. Systems not running Candidate Gateway 9.2 are not identified as affected in the provided sources.

Exploitation context

The provided sources do not show CISA KEV listing or active exploitation. The CVE says exploitation is easy over HTTP but requires human interaction by someone other than the attacker.

Researcher notes

Evidence is limited to the CVE record and Oracle CPU reference. No CWE, detailed root cause, proof of concept, or named workaround is provided in the bundle. Avoid assuming broader PeopleSoft versions or components beyond Candidate Gateway 9.2.

Mitigation direction

  • Review Oracle April 2020 CPU guidance for this CVE.
  • Apply the relevant Oracle PeopleSoft security updates if applicable.
  • Restrict external access to Candidate Gateway where business requirements allow.
  • Prioritize systems handling applicant or employee data.
  • Monitor Oracle advisories for any later guidance.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory PeopleSoft HRMS or HCM Candidate Gateway deployments.
  • Confirm whether any deployment is version 9.2.
  • Check whether the April 2020 Oracle CPU remediation is applied.
  • Identify internet-facing or partner-accessible Candidate Gateway endpoints.
  • Review logs for unusual unauthenticated web activity around Candidate Gateway.
