CVE-2020-29380: An issue was discovered on V-SOL V1600D V2.03.69 and V2.03.57, V1600D4L V1.01.49, V1600D-MINI V1.01.48, V16...

An issue was discovered on V-SOL V1600D V2.03.69 and V2.03.57, V1600D4L V1.01.49, V1600D-MINI V1.01.48, V1600G1 V2.0.7 and V1.9.7, and V1600G2 V1.1.4 OLT devices. TELNET is offered by default but SSH is not always available. An attacker can intercept passwords sent in cleartext and conduct a man-in-the-middle attack on the management of the appliance.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

Affected V-SOL OLT devices expose management through Telnet by default, and SSH may not be available. Telnet sends passwords without encryption, so someone positioned on the management network could capture credentials or interfere with appliance administration.

Executive priority

Prioritize this for telecom, ISP, campus, or managed network environments using affected V-SOL OLTs. It is not reported as actively exploited, but credential exposure on infrastructure management can create serious operational risk.

Technical view

CVE-2020-29380 covers cleartext management risk on listed V-SOL V1600D, V1600D4L, V1600D-MINI, V1600G1, and V1600G2 firmware versions. The reported issue is default Telnet availability and inconsistent SSH support, enabling password interception and management man-in-the-middle exposure.

Likely exposure

Exposure is likely limited to environments using the named V-SOL OLT models and firmware, especially where management traffic crosses shared, untrusted, or poorly segmented networks.

Exploitation context

The provided sources do not show CISA KEV listing or confirmed active exploitation. Practical abuse requires a network position capable of observing or altering management traffic.

Researcher notes

The public record is sparse: no CVSS, CWE, CPE, named patch, or vendor remediation is included in the supplied sources. Treat product/version validation and vendor follow-up as essential before declaring exposure closed.

Mitigation direction

  • Check V-SOL guidance for firmware updates or supported secure management options.
  • Disable Telnet where possible and use encrypted management channels when available.
  • Restrict management access to trusted administrative networks only.
  • Use network segmentation or VPN controls for OLT administration.
  • Rotate credentials if Telnet management traffic may have been exposed.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory V-SOL OLT model and firmware versions against the CVE description.
  • Confirm whether Telnet is enabled on management interfaces.
  • Confirm whether SSH or another encrypted management channel is available.
  • Review network paths for shared or untrusted management traffic exposure.
  • Check logs and access records for suspicious administrative activity.
