CVE-2020-2869: Vulnerability in the Oracle WebLogic Server product of Oracle Fusion Middleware (component: Console).

Vulnerability in the Oracle WebLogic Server product of Oracle Fusion Middleware (component: Console). Supported versions that are affected are 10.3.6.0.0, 12.1.3.0.0, 12.2.1.3.0 and 12.2.1.4.0. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows unauthenticated attacker with network access via HTTP to compromise Oracle WebLogic Server. Successful attacks require human interaction from a person other than the attacker. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized update, insert or delete access to some of Oracle WebLogic Server accessible data. CVSS 3.0 Base Score 4.3 (Integrity impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.0/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:N).

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2020-2869 affects Oracle WebLogic Server Console. An unauthenticated network attacker can reach the vulnerable component over HTTP, but a separate user must interact for the attack to succeed. The documented impact is limited to unauthorized changes to some WebLogic-accessible data, not data theft or service outage.

Executive priority

Treat as a moderate-priority integrity risk. Prioritize systems where WebLogic Console is exposed beyond trusted administrators, because the issue is remotely reachable and unauthenticated, even though impact is limited and user interaction is required.

Technical view

Oracle describes a low-complexity, unauthenticated HTTP vulnerability in WebLogic Server Console affecting versions 10.3.6.0.0, 12.1.3.0.0, 12.2.1.3.0, and 12.2.1.4.0. CVSS 3.0 score is 4.3, with required user interaction and low integrity impact only.

Likely exposure

Exposure is most relevant where affected WebLogic Server Console instances are reachable over HTTP by untrusted networks. Internet-facing or broadly accessible administrative consoles raise urgency, even though successful exploitation requires user interaction.

Exploitation context

The provided sources do not show CISA KEV listing or active exploitation. Oracle states the issue is easily exploitable over HTTP without attacker authentication, but requires human interaction by someone other than the attacker.

Researcher notes

No CWE is provided in the source bundle. The key constraints are AV:N, AC:L, PR:N, UI:R, S:U, C:N, I:L, A:N. Avoid assuming confidentiality or availability impact beyond Oracle’s description.

Mitigation direction

  • Identify WebLogic Server instances running affected versions.
  • Review Oracle April 2020 CPU guidance for applicable WebLogic remediation.
  • Apply current Oracle-supported security updates where applicable.
  • Restrict WebLogic Console access to trusted administrative networks.
  • Reduce unnecessary HTTP exposure to administrative interfaces.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory WebLogic Server versions across production and nonproduction environments.
  • Confirm whether Console endpoints are reachable from untrusted networks.
  • Verify Oracle CPU remediation status for affected WebLogic versions.
  • Review access controls around WebLogic administrative console exposure.
  • Document compensating controls if patching is delayed.
