CVE-2020-2868: Vulnerability in the PeopleSoft Enterprise PeopleTools product of Oracle PeopleSoft (component: Diagnostic...

Vulnerability in the PeopleSoft Enterprise PeopleTools product of Oracle PeopleSoft (component: Diagnostic Framework). Supported versions that are affected are 8.56, 8.57 and 8.58. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows unauthenticated attacker with network access via HTTP to compromise PeopleSoft Enterprise PeopleTools. Successful attacks require human interaction from a person other than the attacker and while the vulnerability is in PeopleSoft Enterprise PeopleTools, attacks may significantly impact additional products. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized update, insert or delete access to some of PeopleSoft Enterprise PeopleTools accessible data as well as unauthorized read access to a subset of PeopleSoft Enterprise PeopleTools accessible data. CVSS 3.0 Base Score 6.1 (Confidentiality and Integrity impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.0/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N).

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2020-2868 affects Oracle PeopleSoft Enterprise PeopleTools Diagnostic Framework in versions 8.56, 8.57, and 8.58. An unauthenticated network attacker can trigger impact over HTTP, but a separate user must interact. Successful abuse can read some data and modify some PeopleTools-accessible data.

Executive priority

Treat this as a moderate-priority PeopleSoft remediation item. The issue is not described as actively exploited, but unauthenticated HTTP reachability and possible data modification justify timely patch verification, especially for externally reachable systems.

Technical view

Oracle describes a low-complexity, network-reachable, unauthenticated vulnerability in PeopleSoft Enterprise PeopleTools Diagnostic Framework. The CVSS vector is AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N, indicating user interaction, changed scope, limited confidentiality and integrity impact, and no availability impact.

Likely exposure

Exposure is most likely where Oracle PeopleSoft Enterprise PeopleTools 8.56, 8.57, or 8.58 is deployed with HTTP access to affected PeopleTools functionality. Internet-facing or broadly reachable PeopleSoft environments carry higher business risk.

Exploitation context

The source bundle does not show CISA KEV listing or active exploitation evidence. Oracle states exploitation is easy, unauthenticated, network-based via HTTP, and requires human interaction from someone other than the attacker.

Researcher notes

No CWE is supplied in the bundle. Scope is changed, so related products may be affected by successful attacks, but the vulnerability is specifically in PeopleSoft Enterprise PeopleTools Diagnostic Framework. Do not assume exploit availability from the provided evidence.

Mitigation direction

  • Review Oracle April 2020 CPU guidance for CVE-2020-2868.
  • Apply applicable Oracle PeopleSoft PeopleTools security fixes.
  • Identify and prioritize PeopleTools 8.56, 8.57, and 8.58 systems.
  • Restrict HTTP access to PeopleSoft administrative surfaces where feasible.
  • Monitor vendor guidance if patch status is unclear.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory PeopleSoft Enterprise PeopleTools versions in production and staging.
  • Confirm whether versions 8.56, 8.57, or 8.58 remain deployed.
  • Check whether PeopleSoft HTTP endpoints are internet-facing or broadly reachable.
  • Verify Oracle CPU remediation has been applied for affected instances.
  • Review application logs for unusual Diagnostic Framework access patterns.
