CVE-2020-28631: Multiple code execution vulnerabilities exists in the Nef polygon-parsing functionality of CGAL libcgal CGA...

Multiple code execution vulnerabilities exists in the Nef polygon-parsing functionality of CGAL libcgal CGAL-5.1.1. A specially crafted malformed file can lead to an out-of-bounds read and type confusion, which could lead to code execution. An attacker can provide malicious input to trigger any of these vulnerabilities. An oob read vulnerability exists in Nef_S2/SNC_io_parser.h SNC_io_parser<EW>::read_sedge() seh->source().

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CGAL libcgal 5.1.1 can mishandle specially crafted malformed Nef polygon input. If an exposed application lets attackers submit such input, the flaw could crash processing or potentially allow code execution. The business risk is highest where CGAL is used in internet-facing file conversion, geometry processing, CAD, GIS, or analysis services.

Executive priority

Treat as urgent where CGAL processes external files or requests. The severity is critical, but priority should be based on confirmed use of affected CGAL parsing paths and exposure to untrusted input.

Technical view

The CVE describes multiple code execution vulnerabilities in CGAL 5.1.1 Nef polygon parsing, including an out-of-bounds read and type confusion. The named location is Nef_S2/SNC_io_parser.h in SNC_io_parser<EW>::read_sedge() via seh->source(). It is mapped to CWE-129 and scored CVSS 3.0 10.0.

Likely exposure

Exposure is limited to software that embeds or links affected CGAL libcgal and parses attacker-controlled Nef polygon or related geometry files. The bundle names CGAL-5.1.1, but does not prove other versions are affected.

Exploitation context

The source bundle does not cite active exploitation, and KEV is false. The described attack condition is malicious input supplied to the parser. CVSS lists network attack vector, no privileges, no user interaction, and full confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact.

Researcher notes

Evidence supports parser memory safety flaws that may lead to code execution, but the bundle does not include exploit status or precise upstream fixed versions. Keep analysis tied to affected CGAL-5.1.1 and distributor advisories unless additional vendor data is obtained.

Mitigation direction

  • Identify applications and packages using CGAL libcgal 5.1.1.
  • Apply CGAL, Debian, Gentoo, or other vendor security updates where available.
  • Restrict untrusted geometry file ingestion until patched.
  • Run parsing workloads with least privilege and isolation.
  • Check vendor advisories for exact fixed versions and backports.

Validation and detection

  • Search SBOMs and package inventories for CGAL or libcgal 5.1.1.
  • Map services that parse user-supplied CAD, GIS, or geometry files.
  • Confirm distro package status against Debian and Gentoo advisories.
  • Review application dependency locks and container images for bundled CGAL.
  • Verify no internet-facing workflow accepts untrusted Nef polygon input unpatched.
