CVE-2020-28622: Multiple code execution vulnerabilities exists in the Nef polygon-parsing functionality of CGAL libcgal CGA...

Multiple code execution vulnerabilities exists in the Nef polygon-parsing functionality of CGAL libcgal CGAL-5.1.1. A specially crafted malformed file can lead to an out-of-bounds read and type confusion, which could lead to code execution. An attacker can provide malicious input to trigger any of these vulnerabilities. An oob read vulnerability exists in Nef_S2/SNC_io_parser.h SNC_io_parser<EW>::read_edge() eh->incident_sface().

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CGAL libcgal 5.1.1 can mishandle malformed Nef polygon input. If an exposed application parses attacker-supplied geometry files through this code, memory corruption could lead to code execution. The business concern is highest for services that automatically process uploaded or remote geometry data.

Executive priority

Treat as urgent for internet-facing or automated file-processing systems using CGAL 5.1.1. Lower priority only when CGAL is absent, upgraded, or unable to receive untrusted geometry input.

Technical view

The issue is in CGAL Nef polygon parsing, specifically Nef_S2/SNC_io_parser.h read_edge(). Sources describe out-of-bounds read and type confusion from malformed input, potentially leading to code execution. The CVE is mapped to CWE-129 and has CVSS 10.0.

Likely exposure

Exposure is likely where CGAL libcgal 5.1.1 is installed and applications parse untrusted Nef polygon or related geometry files. Back-end import pipelines, upload processors, CAD/geometry services, and containerized workloads should be checked.

Exploitation context

The bundle does not show CISA KEV listing or active exploitation evidence. Exploitation requires malicious input reaching the vulnerable parser. The CVSS vector rates it network-reachable, low complexity, unauthenticated, and no user interaction, but local architecture determines practical reachability.

Researcher notes

The record describes one TALOS report among multiple related CGAL parser issues. Evidence supports memory-safety impact and possible code execution, but this bundle does not identify active exploitation, exploit availability, or a specific upstream fixed release.

Mitigation direction

  • Apply CGAL/libcgal updates from upstream or operating-system vendors.
  • Use Debian DLA 3226-1 or Gentoo GLSA-202305-34 where applicable.
  • Avoid processing untrusted Nef polygon files until patched.
  • Sandbox services that parse user-supplied geometry data.
  • Check CGAL Project guidance for fixed versions in source builds.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory hosts, containers, and build manifests for CGAL/libcgal 5.1.1.
  • Find applications that parse Nef polygon or user-supplied geometry files.
  • Confirm installed distro packages include the relevant security update.
  • Review upload and import paths for automatic geometry parsing.
  • Verify compensating controls isolate parser failures from core systems.
