CVE-2020-28616: Multiple code execution vulnerabilities exists in the Nef polygon-parsing functionality of CGAL libcgal CGA...

Multiple code execution vulnerabilities exists in the Nef polygon-parsing functionality of CGAL libcgal CGAL-5.1.1. A specially crafted malformed file can lead to an out-of-bounds read and type confusion, which could lead to code execution. An attacker can provide malicious input to trigger any of these vulnerabilities. An oob read vulnerability exists in Nef_S2/SNC_io_parser.h SNC_io_parser<EW>::read_vertex() vh->sfaces_begin().

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

A maliciously crafted file processed by vulnerable CGAL code could cause an application to crash or potentially execute attacker-controlled code. The business risk is highest for services or tools that accept geometry/model files from external users. The provided sources do not show active exploitation.

Executive priority

Prioritize remediation for internet-facing or partner-facing file-processing services. If CGAL is only used in controlled internal workflows with trusted files, urgency is reduced but patching remains important because the vulnerability is critical.

Technical view

CVE-2020-28616 affects CGAL libcgal CGAL-5.1.1 Nef polygon parsing. Sources describe out-of-bounds read and type confusion, including in Nef_S2/SNC_io_parser.h read_vertex(), potentially leading to code execution. It is mapped to CWE-129 and scored CVSS 10.0.

Likely exposure

Exposure is likely where CGAL/libcgal 5.1.1 or vulnerable distro packages are used by applications that parse Nef polygon or related geometry files, especially from untrusted sources.

Exploitation context

Sources state an attacker can provide malicious input to trigger the issue. CISA KEV is false, and the provided bundle does not cite active exploitation or public weaponization.

Researcher notes

Evidence names CGAL-5.1.1 and Nef polygon parsing, but the bundle does not provide detailed fixed upstream versions. Distribution advisories confirm packaged security updates. Validate reachability through application file-processing paths before estimating operational exposure.

Mitigation direction

  • Update CGAL/libcgal using applicable vendor or distribution security advisories.
  • Prioritize Debian and Gentoo package updates where those distributions are used.
  • Avoid processing untrusted geometry files until affected components are updated.
  • Restrict public upload or parsing paths that reach CGAL Nef polygon parsing.
  • Check vendor guidance if using bundled or statically linked CGAL code.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory applications and containers for CGAL/libcgal usage.
  • Confirm whether CGAL-5.1.1 or vulnerable distro package versions are present.
  • Identify workflows accepting external geometry, model, or polygon files.
  • Verify patched package versions from Debian, Gentoo, or upstream guidance.
  • Review SBOMs for statically linked or vendored CGAL copies.
