CVE-2020-2841: Vulnerability in the Oracle Knowledge Management product of Oracle E-Business Suite (component: Setup, Admin).

Vulnerability in the Oracle Knowledge Management product of Oracle E-Business Suite (component: Setup, Admin). Supported versions that are affected are 12.1.1-12.1.3. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows unauthenticated attacker with network access via HTTP to compromise Oracle Knowledge Management. Successful attacks require human interaction from a person other than the attacker and while the vulnerability is in Oracle Knowledge Management, attacks may significantly impact additional products. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized access to critical data or complete access to all Oracle Knowledge Management accessible data as well as unauthorized update, insert or delete access to some of Oracle Knowledge Management accessible data. CVSS 3.0 Base Score 8.2 (Confidentiality and Integrity impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.0/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:H/I:L/A:N).

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2020-2841 affects Oracle Knowledge Management within Oracle E-Business Suite versions 12.1.1 through 12.1.3. An unauthenticated attacker reachable over HTTP could trigger it if another person interacts with the attack. The main business risk is exposure of critical Knowledge Management data and limited unauthorized data modification.

Executive priority

Treat as high priority for any organization still operating affected Oracle E-Business Suite Knowledge Management versions. The risk centers on critical data exposure with some integrity impact, not service outage. Prioritize inventory, patch confirmation, and exposure reduction.

Technical view

Oracle describes an easily exploitable network vulnerability in the Knowledge Management Setup/Admin component. CVSS 3.0 is 8.2 with no privileges required, user interaction required, changed scope, high confidentiality impact, low integrity impact, and no availability impact. Oracle notes attacks may significantly impact additional products.

Likely exposure

Organizations running Oracle E-Business Suite with Oracle Knowledge Management versions 12.1.1, 12.1.2, or 12.1.3 are potentially exposed, especially where HTTP access is reachable by untrusted users.

Exploitation context

The bundle shows no CISA KEV listing and provides no cited evidence of active exploitation. The vulnerability is network reachable over HTTP, requires no attacker authentication, and requires human interaction from someone other than the attacker.

Researcher notes

Evidence is limited to Oracle and CVE records. Do not assume broader affected versions, public exploit availability, or exact patch identifiers beyond Oracle CPU guidance. Validation should focus on version presence, HTTP reachability, patch state, and data-access telemetry.

Mitigation direction

  • Identify all Oracle E-Business Suite instances with Knowledge Management enabled.
  • Confirm whether versions 12.1.1 through 12.1.3 are present.
  • Review Oracle Critical Patch Update guidance from April 2020.
  • Apply the applicable Oracle-provided patches or vendor-supported remediation.
  • Reduce HTTP exposure to trusted networks until remediation is complete.
  • Monitor for unexpected Knowledge Management data access or modification.

Validation and detection

  • Check deployed Oracle Knowledge Management version numbers against 12.1.1 through 12.1.3.
  • Verify Oracle CPU April 2020 remediation status in patch records.
  • Confirm HTTP access paths are documented and appropriately restricted.
  • Review application logs for unusual unauthenticated access patterns.
  • Validate critical Knowledge Management data permissions after remediation.
