CVE-2020-2797: Vulnerability in the PeopleSoft Enterprise PeopleTools product of Oracle PeopleSoft (component: Process Sch...

Vulnerability in the PeopleSoft Enterprise PeopleTools product of Oracle PeopleSoft (component: Process Scheduler). Supported versions that are affected are 8.56, 8.57 and 8.58. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows unauthenticated attacker with network access via HTTP to compromise PeopleSoft Enterprise PeopleTools. Successful attacks require human interaction from a person other than the attacker and while the vulnerability is in PeopleSoft Enterprise PeopleTools, attacks may significantly impact additional products. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized update, insert or delete access to some of PeopleSoft Enterprise PeopleTools accessible data as well as unauthorized read access to a subset of PeopleSoft Enterprise PeopleTools accessible data. CVSS 3.0 Base Score 6.1 (Confidentiality and Integrity impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.0/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N).

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

This issue matters for organizations running Oracle PeopleSoft PeopleTools because an external unauthenticated attacker could, with user interaction, tamper with or read some accessible PeopleTools data. The public record rates it CVSS 6.1, so urgency is meaningful but below emergency unless systems are internet-exposed or business-critical.

Executive priority

Schedule prompt remediation for affected PeopleSoft environments, especially externally reachable systems. This is not presented as actively exploited in the supplied sources, but unauthenticated HTTP reachability and potential data tampering make it a business-relevant risk.

Technical view

Oracle describes CVE-2020-2797 as a Process Scheduler vulnerability in PeopleSoft Enterprise PeopleTools 8.56, 8.57, and 8.58. It is reachable over HTTP, requires no privileges, and requires user interaction. Successful exploitation may cross security scope and allow limited unauthorized read and data modification in PeopleTools-accessible data.

Likely exposure

Exposure is most likely where PeopleSoft Enterprise PeopleTools 8.56, 8.57, or 8.58 is deployed and reachable over HTTP. Internet-facing or broadly internal PeopleSoft portals deserve faster review because the attacker needs network access but not credentials.

Exploitation context

The provided sources do not show CISA KEV listing or active exploitation. The vulnerability is described as easily exploitable, but it requires human interaction from someone other than the attacker. Treat phishing or user-driven interaction as the likely enabling condition.

Researcher notes

The record lacks CWE detail and does not provide exploit mechanics. Key constraints are AV:N, AC:L, PR:N, UI:R, S:C, C:L, I:L, A:N. Validate version, component exposure, HTTP reachability, and Oracle CPU status without assuming broader product impact beyond the cited scope-change language.

Mitigation direction

  • Inventory PeopleSoft Enterprise PeopleTools 8.56, 8.57, and 8.58 deployments.
  • Review Oracle's April 2020 Critical Patch Update guidance for CVE-2020-2797.
  • Prioritize remediation for HTTP-reachable and business-critical PeopleSoft systems.
  • Limit unnecessary network access to PeopleSoft while patch status is confirmed.
  • Monitor PeopleSoft access and data-change activity for unusual patterns.

Validation and detection

  • Confirm whether PeopleTools versions 8.56, 8.57, or 8.58 are present.
  • Check whether affected PeopleSoft services are reachable over HTTP from untrusted networks.
  • Verify Oracle CPU remediation status for each PeopleSoft environment.
  • Review logs for suspicious unauthenticated HTTP activity around PeopleSoft workflows.
  • Confirm compensating controls reduce exposure until vendor guidance is applied.
