CVE-2020-2796: Vulnerability in the Oracle Email Center product of Oracle E-Business Suite (component: Message Display).

Vulnerability in the Oracle Email Center product of Oracle E-Business Suite (component: Message Display). Supported versions that are affected are 12.1.1-12.1.3 and 12.2.3-12.2.9. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows unauthenticated attacker with network access via HTTP to compromise Oracle Email Center. Successful attacks require human interaction from a person other than the attacker and while the vulnerability is in Oracle Email Center, attacks may significantly impact additional products. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized access to critical data or complete access to all Oracle Email Center accessible data as well as unauthorized update, insert or delete access to some of Oracle Email Center accessible data. CVSS 3.0 Base Score 8.2 (Confidentiality and Integrity impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.0/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:H/I:L/A:N).

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2020-2796 affects Oracle E-Business Suite Email Center. An unauthenticated attacker reachable over HTTP could compromise sensitive Email Center data if a separate user interaction occurs. The main business risk is exposure of critical data, with limited data modification also possible.

Executive priority

Treat as high priority for affected Oracle E-Business Suite environments because unauthenticated HTTP access could expose critical business data. Prioritize internet-facing or broadly reachable Email Center deployments first.

Technical view

The flaw is in Oracle Email Center Message Display within Oracle E-Business Suite versions 12.1.1-12.1.3 and 12.2.3-12.2.9. CVSS 3.0 is 8.2: network reachable, low complexity, no privileges, user interaction required, changed scope, high confidentiality impact, low integrity impact, no availability impact.

Likely exposure

Organizations using Oracle E-Business Suite with Email Center enabled on affected versions, especially where HTTP access is reachable by untrusted users, are the likely exposure set.

Exploitation context

The provided sources do not state active exploitation, and this CVE is not marked KEV. Exploitation is described as easy, unauthenticated, and network-based over HTTP, but it requires human interaction from someone other than the attacker.

Researcher notes

Evidence identifies the affected component, versions, CVSS vector, and impact, but does not provide CWE details, exploit indicators, or technical root cause. Avoid claiming active exploitation without additional evidence.

Mitigation direction

  • Identify Oracle E-Business Suite instances running Email Center.
  • Confirm whether versions match 12.1.1-12.1.3 or 12.2.3-12.2.9.
  • Review Oracle April 2020 CPU guidance for the applicable fix path.
  • Restrict HTTP access to Email Center where business allows.
  • Monitor Email Center data access and modification events.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory Oracle E-Business Suite and Email Center versions.
  • Check whether Email Center is externally or broadly reachable over HTTP.
  • Verify patch status against Oracle April 2020 CPU guidance.
  • Review logs for unusual Email Center data reads or changes.
  • Confirm compensating access controls limit untrusted HTTP reachability.
