CVE-2020-2786: Vulnerability in the Oracle Outside In Technology product of Oracle Fusion Middleware (component: Outside I...

Vulnerability in the Oracle Outside In Technology product of Oracle Fusion Middleware (component: Outside In Filters). Supported versions that is affected is 8.5.4. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows unauthenticated attacker with network access via HTTP to compromise Oracle Outside In Technology. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized update, insert or delete access to some of Oracle Outside In Technology accessible data as well as unauthorized read access to a subset of Oracle Outside In Technology accessible data and unauthorized ability to cause a partial denial of service (partial DOS) of Oracle Outside In Technology. Note: Outside In Technology is a suite of software development kits (SDKs). The protocol and CVSS score depend on the software that uses the Outside In Technology code. The CVSS score assumes that the software passes data received over a network directly to Outside In Technology code, but if data is not received over a network the CVSS score may be lower. CVSS 3.0 Base Score 7.3 (Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.0/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:L).

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2020-2786 affects Oracle Outside In Technology 8.5.4, an SDK often embedded in other software to process documents or data. If an application exposes this processing over HTTP, an unauthenticated attacker may read or change some accessible data and cause partial service disruption.

Executive priority

Treat as high priority where document processing or content ingestion is exposed to the network. Business risk is data tampering, limited data disclosure, and partial disruption in affected services. Scope first because Outside In is an SDK embedded in other products.

Technical view

Oracle describes an easily exploitable Outside In Filters flaw with CVSS 7.3. The score assumes software passes network-received data directly into Outside In Technology. Impact is limited confidentiality, integrity, and availability compromise. Actual severity may be lower where input is not network-sourced.

Likely exposure

Exposure is most likely in applications or Oracle-connected products that embed Outside In Technology 8.5.4 and process untrusted HTTP-submitted content. Systems using the SDK only for local or trusted data may have reduced exposure, per Oracle’s caveat.

Exploitation context

The provided bundle does not show CISA KEV listing or public active exploitation. Oracle says the vulnerability is unauthenticated, network-accessible via HTTP, and low complexity when the embedding application passes network data directly to Outside In code.

Researcher notes

Key uncertainty is the host application. Oracle’s CVSS depends on direct network-to-SDK data flow, and the CVE bundle provides no CWE, root-cause detail, exploit report, or specific remediation text beyond the Oracle CPU reference.

Mitigation direction

  • Inventory direct and embedded use of Oracle Outside In Technology 8.5.4.
  • Review Oracle April 2020 CPU guidance for vendor-provided updates or required actions.
  • Prioritize internet-facing services that process uploaded or remote documents.
  • Restrict untrusted HTTP input to affected processing paths until remediated.
  • Check downstream vendor advisories for products bundling Outside In Technology.

Validation and detection

  • Confirm whether Outside In Technology 8.5.4 exists in deployed applications.
  • Map where HTTP-received data reaches Outside In Filters.
  • Verify patch or mitigation status against Oracle April 2020 CPU guidance.
  • Review application logs for unusual processing errors or partial availability issues.
  • Document reduced-risk cases where only trusted local input reaches the SDK.
