CVE-2020-2785: Vulnerability in the Oracle Outside In Technology product of Oracle Fusion Middleware (component: Outside I...

Vulnerability in the Oracle Outside In Technology product of Oracle Fusion Middleware (component: Outside In Filters). Supported versions that is affected is 8.5.4. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows unauthenticated attacker with network access via HTTP to compromise Oracle Outside In Technology. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized update, insert or delete access to some of Oracle Outside In Technology accessible data as well as unauthorized read access to a subset of Oracle Outside In Technology accessible data and unauthorized ability to cause a partial denial of service (partial DOS) of Oracle Outside In Technology. Note: Outside In Technology is a suite of software development kits (SDKs). The protocol and CVSS score depend on the software that uses the Outside In Technology code. The CVSS score assumes that the software passes data received over a network directly to Outside In Technology code, but if data is not received over a network the CVSS score may be lower. CVSS 3.0 Base Score 7.3 (Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.0/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:L).

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2020-2785 affects Oracle Outside In Technology 8.5.4, an SDK used by other software to process content. If an application exposes that processing over HTTP, an unauthenticated attacker could affect limited confidentiality, integrity, and availability of data reachable by that component.

Executive priority

Treat as a high-priority remediation item for systems that process external documents or uploads. Business urgency is lower where Outside In is not present, not version 8.5.4, or not reachable through network-fed workflows.

Technical view

Oracle describes an easily exploitable Outside In Filters vulnerability in Outside In Technology 8.5.4. The CVSS 3.0 vector is AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:L, but Oracle notes the score depends on how an embedding product passes network data to the SDK.

Likely exposure

Exposure is most likely in applications or products embedding Oracle Outside In Technology 8.5.4 and passing HTTP-received content directly into Outside In Filters. The bundle does not identify downstream affected products.

Exploitation context

The provided sources do not show CISA KEV listing or active exploitation. Oracle rates the issue as remotely reachable without authentication when exposed through an integrating application, but exploit status is not evidenced here.

Researcher notes

Oracle states Outside In is an SDK, so real risk depends on the host application’s protocol exposure and data path. Avoid assuming every deployment is network exploitable; validate whether untrusted HTTP input reaches the vulnerable filters.

Mitigation direction

  • Identify applications embedding Oracle Outside In Technology 8.5.4.
  • Review Oracle April 2020 CPU and current Oracle guidance.
  • Apply vendor-provided updates for Outside In Technology or affected embedding products.
  • Restrict untrusted HTTP content processing where vendor guidance supports it.
  • Prioritize systems processing external uploads or documents.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory software components for Oracle Outside In Technology 8.5.4.
  • Map HTTP routes that pass received data into Outside In Filters.
  • Confirm patch level against Oracle April 2020 CPU guidance.
  • Check vendor advisories for products bundling Outside In Technology.
  • Review logs for unusual document-processing errors or partial service disruption.
