CVE-2020-2782: Vulnerability in the PeopleSoft Enterprise PeopleTools product of Oracle PeopleSoft (component: Query).

Vulnerability in the PeopleSoft Enterprise PeopleTools product of Oracle PeopleSoft (component: Query). Supported versions that are affected are 8.56, 8.57 and 8.58. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows unauthenticated attacker with network access via HTTP to compromise PeopleSoft Enterprise PeopleTools. Successful attacks require human interaction from a person other than the attacker and while the vulnerability is in PeopleSoft Enterprise PeopleTools, attacks may significantly impact additional products. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized update, insert or delete access to some of PeopleSoft Enterprise PeopleTools accessible data as well as unauthorized read access to a subset of PeopleSoft Enterprise PeopleTools accessible data and unauthorized ability to cause a partial denial of service (partial DOS) of PeopleSoft Enterprise PeopleTools. CVSS 3.0 Base Score 7.1 (Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.0/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:L).

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2020-2782 is a high-severity Oracle PeopleSoft PeopleTools Query vulnerability. An unauthenticated attacker with HTTP network access could compromise affected PeopleTools systems if a separate user interaction occurs. Business risk includes limited data disclosure, unauthorized data changes, and partial service disruption.

Executive priority

Treat this as a near-term remediation item for any affected PeopleSoft environment, especially if HTTP access is broad. The risk is meaningful because no authentication is required, although user interaction is still needed.

Technical view

The issue affects Oracle PeopleSoft Enterprise PT PeopleTools versions 8.56, 8.57, and 8.58 in the Query component. CVSS 3.0 is 7.1: AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:L. Impact includes unauthorized read, update, insert, delete, and partial denial of service against accessible PeopleTools data.

Likely exposure

Exposure is likely where PeopleSoft Enterprise PeopleTools 8.56, 8.57, or 8.58 is deployed with HTTP access reachable by untrusted users. The source notes potential impact to additional products, but does not identify specific downstream products.

Exploitation context

The source describes the vulnerability as easily exploitable over HTTP without authentication, but requiring human interaction by someone other than the attacker. The provided bundle does not cite active exploitation, and KEV status is false.

Researcher notes

Evidence is limited to the CVE description and Oracle CPU reference. The component is Query, scope is changed, and impact is low across confidentiality, integrity, and availability. No exploit details or confirmed exploitation are provided in the supplied sources.

Mitigation direction

  • Apply Oracle April 2020 Critical Patch Update guidance for affected PeopleTools versions.
  • Restrict HTTP network access to PeopleSoft endpoints until remediation is verified.
  • Prioritize internet-facing or broadly reachable PeopleSoft deployments first.
  • Review Oracle guidance for any version-specific upgrade or patch prerequisites.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory PeopleTools deployments and confirm versions 8.56, 8.57, or 8.58.
  • Verify Oracle April 2020 CPU remediation is applied or otherwise addressed.
  • Confirm PeopleSoft HTTP endpoints are not reachable from unnecessary networks.
  • Review PeopleSoft logs for unusual Query activity or unexpected data changes.
