CVE-2020-2768: Vulnerability in the MySQL Cluster product of Oracle MySQL (component: Cluster: General).

Vulnerability in the MySQL Cluster product of Oracle MySQL (component: Cluster: General). Supported versions that are affected are 7.3.28 and prior, 7.4.27 and prior, 7.5.17 and prior, 7.6.13 and prior and 8.0.19 and prior. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows low privileged attacker with network access via multiple protocols to compromise MySQL Cluster. Successful attacks require human interaction from a person other than the attacker. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized ability to cause a hang or frequently repeatable crash (complete DOS) of MySQL Cluster as well as unauthorized update, insert or delete access to some of MySQL Cluster accessible data. CVSS 3.0 Base Score 6.3 (Integrity and Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.0/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:H).

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

This flaw can let a low-privileged network attacker disrupt MySQL Cluster and make limited unauthorized data changes, but it requires another person to interact in the attack path. The main business risk is service outage for systems depending on MySQL Cluster, with some data integrity risk.

Executive priority

Treat as a moderate operational risk. Remediate in normal vulnerability management timelines, faster for internet-adjacent, shared, or mission-critical MySQL Cluster environments where outage or data integrity impact would be material.

Technical view

CVE-2020-2768 affects Oracle MySQL Cluster component Cluster: General in 7.3.28 and prior, 7.4.27 and prior, 7.5.17 and prior, 7.6.13 and prior, and 8.0.19 and prior. CVSS 3.0 is 6.3 with network attack vector, low complexity, low privileges, and required user interaction.

Likely exposure

Exposure is likely where MySQL Cluster is deployed on affected versions and reachable by low-privileged users over network-accessible protocols. Organizations using downstream packages or appliances should check Oracle, NetApp, and Gentoo guidance for applicability.

Exploitation context

The provided bundle does not show CISA KEV listing or confirmed active exploitation. The vulnerability is described as easily exploitable, but successful attack requires human interaction by someone other than the attacker. Impact is complete denial of service and limited unauthorized update, insert, or delete access to accessible data.

Researcher notes

The source bundle provides product, version ranges, CVSS vector, and impact, but not root-cause details, proof-of-concept status, or exact fixed versions. Avoid assuming exploit availability. Validate exposure through version inventory and vendor advisory mapping.

Mitigation direction

  • Identify all MySQL Cluster deployments and record exact versions.
  • Prioritize Oracle-supported updates or mitigations from the April 2020 CPU guidance.
  • Check downstream vendor advisories for NetApp and Gentoo-specific exposure.
  • Restrict network access to MySQL Cluster services to trusted users and systems.
  • Review privileged and low-privileged accounts with cluster access.

Validation and detection

  • Compare deployed versions against the affected version ranges in the CVE record.
  • Confirm whether Oracle April 2020 CPU fixes or later supported builds are installed.
  • Check NetApp and Gentoo advisories if those distributions or products are used.
  • Review service monitoring for repeated crashes or hangs in MySQL Cluster.
  • Audit database changes around exposed cluster services for unexplained modifications.
