CVE-2020-2735: Vulnerability in the Java VM component of Oracle Database Server.

Vulnerability in the Java VM component of Oracle Database Server. Supported versions that are affected are 11.2.0.4, 12.1.0.2, 12.2.0.1, 18c and 19c. Difficult to exploit vulnerability allows low privileged attacker having Create Session privilege with network access via Oracle Net to compromise Java VM. Successful attacks require human interaction from a person other than the attacker and while the vulnerability is in Java VM, attacks may significantly impact additional products. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in takeover of Java VM. CVSS 3.0 Base Score 8.0 (Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.0/AV:N/AC:H/PR:L/UI:R/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H).

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

This is a high-severity Oracle Database issue in the Java VM component. A low-privileged database user with Create Session access over Oracle Net could, under difficult conditions requiring another person’s interaction, take over Java VM and affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

Executive priority

Treat this as high priority for Oracle Database environments because successful exploitation could compromise Java VM with high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact. Urgency increases for databases reachable over Oracle Net by many low-privileged users.

Technical view

CVE-2020-2735 affects Oracle Database 11.2.0.4, 12.1.0.2, 12.2.0.1, 18c, and 19c. CVSS 3.0 is 8.0 with network attack vector, high complexity, low privileges, required user interaction, changed scope, and high CIA impact.

Likely exposure

Exposure is most likely where affected Oracle Database versions run the Java VM component, accept Oracle Net connectivity, and have users with Create Session privilege. The source bundle does not define affected configurations beyond supported versions and component.

Exploitation context

The source states exploitation is difficult and requires low privileges, Oracle Net network access, and human interaction from someone other than the attacker. The bundle does not show CISA KEV listing or active exploitation evidence.

Researcher notes

Key constraints are AV:N, AC:H, PR:L, UI:R, S:C. Avoid assuming exploitability without confirming Java VM presence, Oracle Net reachability, and privilege assignments. The sources do not provide exploit details, CWE mapping, or active exploitation confirmation.

Mitigation direction

  • Apply the applicable Oracle April 2020 CPU guidance for affected Oracle Database versions.
  • Prioritize supported Oracle Database instances running 11.2.0.4 through 19c.
  • Restrict Oracle Net access to trusted networks while remediation is planned.
  • Review accounts with Create Session privilege for unnecessary access.
  • Check Oracle guidance before relying on compensating controls.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory Oracle Database versions across production and exposed environments.
  • Confirm whether affected instances include the Java VM component.
  • Identify users or roles with Create Session privilege.
  • Verify April 2020 CPU or later applicable Oracle fixes are installed.
  • Document any unpatched instances and compensating access restrictions.
