CVE-2020-1992: PAN-OS on PA-7000 Series: Varrcvr daemon network-based denial of service or privilege escalation

A format string vulnerability in the Varrcvr daemon of PAN-OS on PA-7000 Series devices with a Log Forwarding Card (LFC) allows remote attackers to crash the daemon creating a denial of service condition or potentially execute code with root privileges. This issue affects Palo Alto Networks PAN-OS 9.0 versions before 9.0.7; PAN-OS 9.1 versions before 9.1.2 on PA-7000 Series devices with an LFC installed and configured. This issue requires WildFire services to be configured and enabled. This issue does not affect PAN-OS 8.1 and earlier releases. This issue does not affect any other PA Series firewalls.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

This flaw affects a narrow but high-value firewall configuration: Palo Alto Networks PA-7000 Series devices with a Log Forwarding Card, running affected PAN-OS 9.0 or 9.1 versions, with WildFire enabled. A remote attacker could crash a daemon or potentially run code as root.

Executive priority

Treat this as high priority for affected PA-7000 firewall estates because impact includes denial of service and potential root-level code execution. The narrow configuration requirement should make scoping fast.

Technical view

CVE-2020-1992 is a CWE-134 format string vulnerability in the PAN-OS Varrcvr daemon. It affects PAN-OS 9.0 before 9.0.7 and 9.1 before 9.1.2 on PA-7000 devices with an installed and configured LFC. WildFire services must be configured and enabled.

Likely exposure

Exposure is limited to PA-7000 Series firewalls with an LFC installed and configured, affected PAN-OS 9.0 or 9.1 versions, and WildFire enabled. PAN-OS 8.1 and earlier and other PA Series firewalls are stated as unaffected.

Exploitation context

The source bundle does not report active exploitation, and the KEV flag is false. The CVSS vector is network-accessible with no privileges or user interaction, but attack complexity is high.

Researcher notes

Focus validation on the conjunction of model, LFC state, PAN-OS branch, and WildFire enablement. Avoid broad assumptions: the provided advisory states other PA Series firewalls and PAN-OS 8.1 and earlier are not affected.

Mitigation direction

  • Upgrade PAN-OS 9.0 deployments to 9.0.7 or later.
  • Upgrade PAN-OS 9.1 deployments to 9.1.2 or later.
  • Prioritize PA-7000 devices with LFC and WildFire enabled.
  • Check Palo Alto Networks guidance before changing WildFire or LFC configuration.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory PA-7000 Series devices separately from other firewall models.
  • Confirm whether an LFC is installed and configured.
  • Check PAN-OS version against 9.0.7 and 9.1.2 fixed thresholds.
  • Confirm whether WildFire services are configured and enabled.
  • Review device logs for unexpected Varrcvr daemon crashes.
