CVE-2020-16862: Microsoft Dynamics 365 (on-premises) Remote Code Execution Vulnerability

<p>A remote code execution vulnerability exists in Microsoft Dynamics 365 (on-premises) when the server fails to properly sanitize web requests to an affected Dynamics server. An attacker who successfully exploited the vulnerability could run arbitrary code in the context of the SQL service account. An authenticated attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a specially crafted request to a vulnerable Dynamics server. The security update addresses the vulnerability by correcting how Microsoft Dynamics 365 (on-premises) validates and sanitizes user input.</p>

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2020-16862 is a high-severity Microsoft Dynamics 365 on-premises flaw. An authenticated attacker could send a crafted web request to a vulnerable server and run code under the SQL service account. The business risk is highest where Dynamics is internet-accessible or broadly reachable by low-privileged users.

Executive priority

Prioritize remediation for any on-premises Dynamics 365 9.0 server, especially if reachable by many users or exposed beyond trusted networks. Treat as a high business-risk issue because compromise can affect sensitive business data and backend SQL context.

Technical view

The vulnerability is improper validation and sanitization of web requests in Microsoft Dynamics 365 (on-premises) version 9.0.0. Successful exploitation can allow arbitrary code execution in the SQL service account context. Microsoft states the security update corrects input validation and sanitization behavior.

Likely exposure

Known affected exposure is Microsoft Dynamics 365 (on-premises) version 9.0.0. The source bundle does not identify cloud Dynamics 365 as affected. Risk depends on deployment reachability, authenticated user population, and SQL service account privileges.

Exploitation context

The source says exploitation requires authentication and a specially crafted request. CVSS lists network attack vector, low privileges, no user interaction, high confidentiality and integrity impact, and high attack complexity. No CISA KEV listing or cited source confirms active exploitation.

Researcher notes

Evidence is limited to Microsoft and CVE source data. The bundle names version 9.0.0 only, describes authenticated request-based RCE, and provides no public exploit procedure. Do not assume broader affected versions, active exploitation, or alternate mitigations without vendor confirmation.

Mitigation direction

  • Apply Microsoft’s security update for CVE-2020-16862.
  • Check Microsoft guidance for supported update paths.
  • Limit Dynamics server access to trusted networks and users.
  • Review SQL service account privileges for least privilege.
  • Monitor Dynamics and SQL logs for abnormal authenticated activity.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory all Microsoft Dynamics 365 on-premises deployments.
  • Confirm whether any instance runs version 9.0.0.
  • Verify the relevant Microsoft security update is installed.
  • Review external and internal reachability to Dynamics servers.
  • Confirm SQL service account privileges are constrained.
