CVE-2020-14784: Vulnerability in the Oracle BI Publisher product of Oracle Fusion Middleware (component: Mobile Service).

Vulnerability in the Oracle BI Publisher product of Oracle Fusion Middleware (component: Mobile Service). Supported versions that are affected are 11.1.1.9.0, 12.2.1.3.0 and 12.2.1.4.0. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows unauthenticated attacker with network access via HTTP to compromise Oracle BI Publisher. Successful attacks require human interaction from a person other than the attacker and while the vulnerability is in Oracle BI Publisher, attacks may significantly impact additional products. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized access to critical data or complete access to all Oracle BI Publisher accessible data as well as unauthorized update, insert or delete access to some of Oracle BI Publisher accessible data. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 8.2 (Confidentiality and Integrity impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:H/I:L/A:N).

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2020-14784 is a high-severity Oracle BI Publisher issue in the Mobile Service component. An unauthenticated attacker with HTTP network access could compromise sensitive BI Publisher data if they can cause required user interaction. The main business risk is unauthorized access to critical reports or datasets, with some ability to alter data.

Executive priority

Prioritize remediation for any externally reachable or business-critical BI Publisher deployment. The vulnerability threatens critical data confidentiality and some data integrity, but available sources do not show confirmed active exploitation or availability impact.

Technical view

Oracle reports affected BI Publisher versions 11.1.1.9.0, 12.2.1.3.0, and 12.2.1.4.0. The CVSS 3.1 score is 8.2 with network attack vector, low complexity, no privileges required, required user interaction, changed scope, high confidentiality impact, low integrity impact, and no availability impact.

Likely exposure

Exposure is most likely where Oracle BI Publisher is deployed on affected versions and reachable over HTTP from user or external networks. Internet-facing or broadly accessible BI Publisher services carry higher urgency. The source bundle does not identify affected configurations beyond the listed versions and Mobile Service component.

Exploitation context

The CVE record says exploitation is easy and unauthenticated over HTTP, but requires human interaction by someone other than the attacker. CISA KEV status is false in the bundle, and no provided source states active exploitation. Do not treat exploitation as confirmed from this bundle alone.

Researcher notes

The source bundle does not provide a CWE, root-cause detail, proof of concept, or specific workaround. Analysis should stay anchored to Oracle’s advisory, affected versions, CVSS vector, HTTP reachability, and required user interaction. Avoid inferring affected Oracle products beyond BI Publisher unless Oracle confirms impact.

Mitigation direction

  • Identify all Oracle BI Publisher deployments and versions.
  • Apply the relevant Oracle October 2020 Critical Patch Update guidance.
  • Restrict HTTP access to BI Publisher to trusted networks and users.
  • Reduce exposure of BI Publisher Mobile Service where business allows.
  • Check Oracle guidance for release-specific remediation details.

Validation and detection

  • Confirm whether versions 11.1.1.9.0, 12.2.1.3.0, or 12.2.1.4.0 are present.
  • Verify Oracle CPU remediation is installed for each BI Publisher instance.
  • Review network paths exposing BI Publisher over HTTP.
  • Confirm unauthenticated access to BI Publisher endpoints is not broadly reachable.
  • Review access logs for unusual BI Publisher activity involving user-driven workflows.
