CVE-2020-14779: Vulnerability in the Java SE, Java SE Embedded product of Oracle Java SE (component: Serialization).

Vulnerability in the Java SE, Java SE Embedded product of Oracle Java SE (component: Serialization). Supported versions that are affected are Java SE: 7u271, 8u261, 11.0.8 and 15; Java SE Embedded: 8u261. Difficult to exploit vulnerability allows unauthenticated attacker with network access via multiple protocols to compromise Java SE, Java SE Embedded. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized ability to cause a partial denial of service (partial DOS) of Java SE, Java SE Embedded. Note: Applies to client and server deployment of Java. This vulnerability can be exploited through sandboxed Java Web Start applications and sandboxed Java applets. It can also be exploited by supplying data to APIs in the specified Component without using sandboxed Java Web Start applications or sandboxed Java applets, such as through a web service. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 3.7 (Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L).

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2020-14779 is a low-severity Oracle Java serialization flaw. A remote unauthenticated attacker could cause a partial denial of service, but Oracle rates exploitation as difficult and the impact is limited to availability. The bundle does not show active exploitation.

Executive priority

Handle through normal vulnerability management and Java patch cycles, with faster action for internet-facing or critical Java services. This is not an emergency based on the provided evidence, but stale Java runtimes can accumulate higher-risk issues and should not remain unsupported.

Technical view

Affected versions are Java SE 7u271, 8u261, 11.0.8, 15, and Java SE Embedded 8u261. The flaw is in Serialization and can affect client and server deployments, including sandboxed Java Web Start, applets, or APIs that process supplied data. CVSS is 3.7, AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L.

Likely exposure

Exposure is most likely where affected Java runtimes remain installed, especially on servers or applications that accept serialized or structured external data through web services. Legacy Java Web Start or applet environments also matter, but only if they use the listed affected versions.

Exploitation context

The source bundle marks KEV as false and provides no cited evidence of active exploitation. Oracle describes exploitation as difficult, network-reachable over multiple protocols, and requiring no privileges or user interaction. Successful exploitation is limited to partial denial of service.

Researcher notes

The key research points are high attack complexity, network reachability, no confidentiality or integrity impact, and low availability impact. The bundle gives no CWE and no detailed root-cause mechanics. Avoid assuming affected downstream products beyond cited vendor package advisories unless confirmed by that vendor.

Mitigation direction

  • Apply Oracle October 2020 CPU or later supported Java updates.
  • Apply distribution OpenJDK updates from Debian, Fedora, or other relevant vendor advisories.
  • Inventory Java SE and Java SE Embedded versions across servers and endpoints.
  • Prioritize business-critical services that process untrusted data with Java serialization APIs.
  • Check third-party product vendor guidance where Java is bundled or embedded.

Validation and detection

  • Confirm no runtime matches 7u271, 8u261, 11.0.8, 15, or Embedded 8u261.
  • Verify installed Java packages include the relevant vendor security update.
  • Review externally reachable Java services for serialization or untrusted data ingestion paths.
  • Identify any legacy Java Web Start or applet use of affected runtimes.
  • Monitor Java services for unexplained availability degradation after patch planning.
