CVE-2020-10276: RVD#2558: Default credentials on SICK PLC allows disabling safety features

The password for the safety PLC is the default and thus easy to find (in manuals, etc.). This allows a manipulated program to be uploaded to the safety PLC, effectively disabling the emergency stop in case an object is too close to the robot. Navigation and any other components dependent on the laser scanner are not affected (thus it is hard to detect before something happens) though the laser scanner configuration can also be affected altering further the safety of the device.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2020-10276 is a critical default-password issue affecting Mobile Industrial Robots MiR100 v2.8.1.1 and earlier. An attacker could alter the safety PLC program and disable emergency-stop behavior tied to object proximity. The business risk is physical safety impact, not just IT downtime.

Executive priority

Treat this as urgent for any facility using affected MiR100 robots. Prioritize safety validation, access control, and vendor-directed remediation before routine IT backlog work.

Technical view

The CVE describes CWE-798 default credentials on the SICK safety PLC used by affected MiR100 robots. CVSS 3.0 is 9.8, network exploitable, low complexity, no privileges or user interaction required. Manipulated safety PLC logic can affect laser-scanner safety behavior while navigation may continue normally.

Likely exposure

Exposure is likely limited to organizations operating MiR100 robots at v2.8.1.1 or earlier, especially where robot control networks are reachable beyond tightly controlled OT maintenance paths.

Exploitation context

The source bundle does not show CISA KEV listing or confirmed active exploitation. The issue is still serious because default credentials are easy to obtain and safety changes may be difficult to detect operationally.

Researcher notes

Evidence supports a default-credential weakness with safety-system consequences, but the provided sources do not name a specific patch level, workaround, or exploitation campaign. Avoid assuming broader MiR models are affected without vendor evidence.

Mitigation direction

  • Check Mobile Industrial Robots and SICK guidance for supported remediation or firmware direction.
  • Replace default safety PLC credentials through authorized maintenance procedures.
  • Restrict robot and PLC access to approved OT management networks only.
  • Review safety PLC programs against approved baselines.
  • Perform controlled validation of emergency-stop and proximity safety functions.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory MiR100 robots and identify firmware versions at or before v2.8.1.1.
  • Confirm whether the safety PLC still uses default credentials.
  • Compare safety PLC configuration with an approved engineering baseline.
  • Review maintenance records for unauthorized safety PLC changes.
  • Validate safety behavior in a controlled, documented safety test.
