CVE-2019-4688: IBM Security Guardium Data Encryption (GDE) 3.0.0.2 does not set the secure attribute on authorization toke...

IBM Security Guardium Data Encryption (GDE) 3.0.0.2 does not set the secure attribute on authorization tokens or session cookies. Attackers may be able to get the cookie values by sending a http:// link to a user or by planting this link in a site the user goes to. The cookie will be sent to the insecure link and the attacker can then obtain the cookie value by snooping the traffic. IBM X-Force ID: 171825.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

IBM Security Guardium Data Encryption 3.0.0.2 may send authorization tokens or session cookies without the Secure cookie protection. If a user is induced onto an insecure HTTP link, the cookie could be exposed on the network. The business risk is credential/session leakage, but the published severity is low.

Executive priority

Handle through normal vulnerability management unless GDE protects high-value data or is broadly reachable. The issue can expose session material, but published scoring and available evidence indicate low urgency and no confirmed active exploitation.

Technical view

The issue is missing Secure attributes on authorization tokens or session cookies in IBM Security Guardium Data Encryption 3.0.0.2. The CVSS 3.0 score is 3.7, with network attack vector, high attack complexity, no privileges required, and low confidentiality impact. IBM X-Force tracks it as 171825.

Likely exposure

Exposure appears limited to IBM Security Guardium Data Encryption version 3.0.0.2. The source bundle does not identify other affected versions, products, or deployment modes. Internet exposure is not established by the sources.

Exploitation context

The bundle does not show CISA KEV listing or cited active exploitation. The described scenario requires the cookie to be sent over an insecure HTTP link and observed in transit. Treat exploitation status as unconfirmed, not active.

Researcher notes

The public bundle lacks CWE mapping and does not provide detailed remediation text beyond IBM references. Do not assume additional affected versions. Validation should focus on version confirmation, cookie attributes after vendor remediation, and whether insecure HTTP paths exist.

Mitigation direction

  • Review IBM advisory 6320835 for the supported fix or remediation path.
  • Prioritize remediation for environments running GDE 3.0.0.2.
  • Restrict GDE access to trusted networks while remediation is pending.
  • Ensure users access GDE only through approved HTTPS endpoints.
  • Monitor vendor guidance for any superseding instructions.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory IBM Security Guardium Data Encryption deployments and confirm version numbers.
  • Check whether any deployment is version 3.0.0.2.
  • After remediation, verify session cookies include the Secure attribute.
  • Review access paths for unintended HTTP exposure.
  • Confirm remediation evidence against IBM advisory guidance.
