CVE-2019-4686: IBM Security Guardium Data Encryption (GDE) 3.0.0.2 does not set the secure attribute on authorization toke...

IBM Security Guardium Data Encryption (GDE) 3.0.0.2 does not set the secure attribute on authorization tokens or session cookies. Attackers may be able to get the cookie values by sending a http:// link to a user or by planting this link in a site the user goes to. The cookie will be sent to the insecure link and the attacker can then obtain the cookie value by snooping the traffic. IBM X-Force ID: 171822.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

IBM Security Guardium Data Encryption 3.0.0.2 may expose login-related cookies because they are not marked as HTTPS-only. If a user is tricked into using an insecure HTTP link, the cookie could travel in cleartext and be intercepted on the network.

Executive priority

Treat as a targeted hygiene issue, not an emergency, unless GDE is internet-accessible or used over untrusted networks. The business concern is potential session token exposure, which could support account misuse if interception succeeds.

Technical view

The issue is missing Secure attributes on authorization tokens or session cookies in IBM Security Guardium Data Encryption 3.0.0.2. CVSS 3.0 score is 3.7, with network attack vector, high attack complexity, no privileges required, and low confidentiality impact. Integrity and availability are not identified as impacted.

Likely exposure

Exposure appears limited to IBM Security Guardium Data Encryption version 3.0.0.2. Organizations without that product and version are not indicated as affected by the provided sources. Risk depends on whether users can reach the service over HTTP or be redirected to insecure links.

Exploitation context

The source bundle does not show CISA KEV listing or public active exploitation. The described attack relies on obtaining cookie values from insecure HTTP traffic after a user follows or encounters an HTTP link. Evidence in the bundle rates exploit maturity as unproven.

Researcher notes

The provided data names only IBM Security Guardium Data Encryption 3.0.0.2. No CWE is listed. The IBM X-Force ID is 171822. Do not broaden scope beyond this version without vendor evidence. Validation should focus on cookie flags and HTTP reachability.

Mitigation direction

  • Identify any IBM Security Guardium Data Encryption 3.0.0.2 deployments.
  • Review IBM advisory guidance for the official fix or configuration direction.
  • Restrict GDE access to HTTPS-only endpoints where operationally possible.
  • Avoid exposing GDE management interfaces to untrusted networks.
  • Review session handling controls for Secure cookie enforcement.

Validation and detection

  • Confirm whether deployed GDE version is 3.0.0.2.
  • Inspect authenticated response cookies for the Secure attribute.
  • Check whether HTTP access to the GDE service is possible.
  • Review proxy or access logs for insecure HTTP requests.
  • Confirm IBM advisory remediation status in change records.
