CVE-2019-3863: A flaw was found in libssh2 before 1.8.1 creating a vulnerability on the SSH client side.

A flaw was found in libssh2 before 1.8.1 creating a vulnerability on the SSH client side. A server could send a multiple keyboard interactive response messages whose total length are greater than unsigned char max characters. This value is used by the SSH client as an index to copy memory causing in an out of bounds memory write error.

Security readout for executives and security teams

CVE-2019-3863 affects SSH clients built with libssh2 before 1.8.1. A malicious SSH server could trigger memory corruption during keyboard-interactive authentication, potentially compromising the connecting client. This is client-side risk, not an SSH server exposure by itself. Exposure is most likely in products, agents, scripts, or appliances that bundle libssh2 and initiate SSH connections to external or less trusted servers. Internet-facing servers are not automatically affected unless they also run vulnerable libssh2 client functionality. Treat this as a high-priority patching and inventory issue for systems that make SSH outbound connections. Business urgency is highest where automated tools connect to untrusted infrastructure or where compromised clients could expose credentials, code, or operational access. Mitigation focus: Upgrade libssh2 to 1.8.1 or a vendor-fixed package.; Apply relevant vendor advisories for Red Hat, Debian, Fedora, openSUSE, NetApp, or Oracle distributions.; Inventory applications and appliances that statically bundle libssh2..
