CVE-2019-19900: An issue was discovered in Backdrop CMS 1.13.x before 1.13.5 and 1.14.x before 1.14.2.

An issue was discovered in Backdrop CMS 1.13.x before 1.13.5 and 1.14.x before 1.14.2. It doesn't sufficiently filter output when displaying content type names in the content creation interface. An attacker could potentially craft a specialized content type name, then have an editor execute scripting when creating content, aka XSS. This vulnerability is mitigated by the fact that an attacker must have a role with the "Administer content types" permission.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

This is a Backdrop CMS cross-site scripting issue in the content creation interface. A user who can administer content types could create a malicious content type name that runs script when an editor creates content. The privilege requirement lowers broad internet risk, but compromised or over-permissioned admin accounts could still create business impact.

Executive priority

Prioritize remediation during normal security maintenance unless affected sites allow broad content type administration. Escalate if privileged accounts are shared, externally managed, or suspected compromised.

Technical view

Backdrop CMS 1.13.x before 1.13.5 and 1.14.x before 1.14.2 insufficiently filters content type names when rendering the content creation interface, enabling XSS against editors. The source states exploitation requires the "Administer content types" permission. No CVSS, CWE, or vendor-described exploit activity is included in the bundle.

Likely exposure

Exposure is likely limited to Backdrop CMS sites on the affected version branches where users beyond fully trusted administrators hold content type administration rights.

Exploitation context

The provided sources do not cite active exploitation, and the CVE is not listed as KEV. Treat exploit status as unknown beyond the vendor-described XSS condition.

Researcher notes

The key constraint is privilege-gated XSS. Validate version exposure and permission boundaries first. The bundle does not provide CVSS scoring, CWE mapping, exploit evidence, or detailed patch mechanics beyond fixed Backdrop CMS versions.

Mitigation direction

  • Upgrade Backdrop CMS 1.13.x to 1.13.5 or later.
  • Upgrade Backdrop CMS 1.14.x to 1.14.2 or later.
  • Restrict "Administer content types" to trusted administrators only.
  • Review content type administration permissions for unnecessary assignments.
  • Check vendor guidance before applying compensating controls.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory Backdrop CMS versions across production and staging sites.
  • Confirm affected branches are upgraded past the fixed versions.
  • Review roles with "Administer content types" permission.
  • Inspect recent content type changes by privileged users.
  • Verify editors can create content normally after upgrade.
