CVE-2019-1973: Cisco Enterprise NFV Infrastructure Software Cross-site Scripting Vulnerability

A vulnerability in the web portal framework of Cisco Enterprise NFV Infrastructure Software (NFVIS) could allow an authenticated, remote attacker to conduct a cross-site scripting (XSS) attack against a user of the web-based interface. The vulnerability is due to improper input validation of log file content stored on the affected device. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by modifying a log file with malicious code and getting a user to view the modified log file. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary script code in the context of the affected interface or to access sensitive, browser-based information.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2019-1973 is a medium-severity Cisco NFVIS web portal issue. An authenticated attacker who can alter log content could cause malicious script to run when another user views that log in the web interface, potentially exposing browser-based information or affecting interface actions.

Executive priority

Treat this as a moderate-priority management-plane issue. It is not listed as actively exploited, but NFVIS can support critical network functions, so affected deployments should be identified and remediated through Cisco guidance.

Technical view

The vulnerability is CWE-79 XSS in Cisco Enterprise NFV Infrastructure Software’s web portal framework. It stems from improper validation of stored log file content. CVSS 3.0 is 4.8 with network access, low complexity, high privileges required, user interaction required, changed scope, and low confidentiality and integrity impact.

Likely exposure

Exposure is limited to organizations running Cisco Enterprise NFV Infrastructure Software with the web-based interface in use. The source bundle does not identify affected versions, fixed releases, or whether Internet exposure is common.

Exploitation context

The provided sources do not show active exploitation, and KEV is false. Exploitation requires an authenticated remote attacker with high privileges to modify log content and a user to view the modified log in the NFVIS web interface.

Researcher notes

Evidence is sparse on affected versions and fixes in the supplied bundle. The key condition is stored log content rendered by the NFVIS web portal without sufficient validation, creating authenticated, user-assisted XSS risk.

Mitigation direction

  • Review Cisco’s advisory for fixed software, workarounds, and upgrade applicability.
  • Restrict NFVIS web portal access to trusted administrative users.
  • Avoid viewing unexpected or untrusted log content in the portal until remediated.
  • Prioritize remediation where NFVIS manages sensitive network functions.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory Cisco Enterprise NFV Infrastructure Software deployments and management interfaces.
  • Confirm installed NFVIS versions against Cisco’s advisory and asset records.
  • Check whether authenticated users can modify logs viewed in the web portal.
  • Review portal activity for unusual log viewing or administrative account misuse.
