CVE-2019-1928: Cisco Webex Network Recording Player and Cisco Webex Player Arbitrary Code Execution Vulnerabilities

Multiple vulnerabilities in Cisco Webex Network Recording Player for Microsoft Windows and Cisco Webex Player for Microsoft Windows could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code on an affected system. The vulnerabilities exist because the affected software improperly validates Advanced Recording Format (ARF) and Webex Recording Format (WRF) files. An attacker could exploit these vulnerabilities by sending a user a malicious ARF or WRF file through a link or email attachment and persuading the user to open the file with the affected software on the local system. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary code on the affected system with the privileges of the targeted user.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

This flaw affects Cisco Webex recording players on Windows. If a user opens a malicious Webex recording file, an attacker could run code as that user. Business risk is highest where employees still use ARF or WRF recordings from email or links.

Executive priority

Treat this as a high-priority endpoint exposure if Webex recording players are present. It is not described as remotely exploitable without user action, but successful compromise could give an attacker the user's workstation privileges.

Technical view

CVE-2019-1928 is a CWE-119 memory-safety issue in Cisco Webex Network Recording Player and Cisco Webex Player for Windows. Improper validation of ARF and WRF files can allow arbitrary code execution after user interaction. CVSS v3.0 is 7.8 with local attack vector and required user interaction.

Likely exposure

Exposure is likely limited to Windows endpoints with the affected Cisco Webex recording/player software installed, especially users who receive or open ARF or WRF files. The source bundle does not provide exact affected versions.

Exploitation context

The cited description requires social engineering: delivery of a malicious ARF or WRF file by link or attachment, followed by the user opening it locally. The bundle marks KEV as false and provides no evidence of active exploitation.

Researcher notes

Focus validation on installed Windows players and ARF/WRF handling paths. The bundle supports arbitrary code execution through malformed recording files, but does not include exploit details, affected version ranges, fixed releases, or observed exploitation.

Mitigation direction

  • Check Cisco's advisory for fixed versions and official remediation guidance.
  • Inventory Windows endpoints for Cisco Webex recording/player software.
  • Remove the affected player where Webex recording playback is not needed.
  • Warn users not to open unexpected ARF or WRF files.
  • Filter or quarantine unexpected ARF and WRF attachments where operationally acceptable.

Validation and detection

  • Confirm whether Cisco Webex recording/player software exists on managed Windows endpoints.
  • Compare installed versions with the Cisco advisory before closing remediation.
  • Review mail and web controls for handling ARF and WRF files.
  • Confirm users handling Webex recordings received targeted awareness guidance.
  • Verify endpoint controls monitor unusual child processes from the player.
