CVE-2019-1924: Cisco Webex Network Recording Player and Cisco Webex Player Arbitrary Code Execution Vulnerabilities

Multiple vulnerabilities in Cisco Webex Network Recording Player for Microsoft Windows and Cisco Webex Player for Microsoft Windows could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code on an affected system. The vulnerabilities exist because the affected software improperly validates Advanced Recording Format (ARF) and Webex Recording Format (WRF) files. An attacker could exploit these vulnerabilities by sending a user a malicious ARF or WRF file through a link or email attachment and persuading the user to open the file with the affected software on the local system. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary code on the affected system with the privileges of the targeted user.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

This flaw affects Cisco Webex recording players for Windows. If a user is tricked into opening a malicious ARF or WRF recording file, attacker code could run as that user. The risk is meaningful for organizations that still allow these legacy recording players or receive Webex recording files by email or links.

Executive priority

Prioritize remediation where these players remain installed on user workstations, especially for staff likely to receive external meeting recordings. The issue requires user action but can lead to full code execution within the user’s privileges.

Technical view

CVE-2019-1924 is a CWE-119 memory-safety issue in Cisco Webex Network Recording Player and Cisco Webex Player for Windows. The software improperly validates ARF and WRF files. Exploitation is local and requires user interaction, but needs no privileges and can affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

Likely exposure

Exposure is most likely on Windows endpoints with Cisco Webex Network Recording Player, Cisco Webex Player, or Cisco WebEx WRF Player installed. The bundle does not provide affected version ranges, so inventory must be checked against Cisco guidance.

Exploitation context

The source describes phishing-style delivery through a link or email attachment and persuasion to open a malicious ARF or WRF file. The bundle does not show CISA KEV listing or cited evidence of active exploitation.

Researcher notes

Key constraints are user interaction and local file parsing. The provided evidence confirms ARF/WRF validation failure and arbitrary code execution impact, but does not include fixed versions, proof-of-concept details, or active exploitation evidence.

Mitigation direction

  • Review Cisco advisory cisco-sa-20190807-webex-player for affected and fixed software guidance.
  • Remove affected Webex recording players where business use is no longer required.
  • Limit ARF and WRF attachments or downloads from untrusted sources where feasible.
  • Warn users not to open unexpected Webex recording files from links or attachments.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory Windows endpoints for Cisco Webex Network Recording Player and Webex Player installations.
  • Compare installed player versions against Cisco advisory guidance.
  • Check mail and web controls for handling of ARF and WRF files.
  • Review endpoint telemetry for suspicious activity following recording file opens.
