CVE-2019-1880: Cisco Unified Computing System BIOS Signature Bypass Vulnerability

A vulnerability in the BIOS upgrade utility of Cisco Unified Computing System (UCS) C-Series Rack Servers could allow an authenticated, local attacker to install compromised BIOS firmware on an affected device. The vulnerability is due to insufficient validation of the firmware image file. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by executing the BIOS upgrade utility with a specific set of options. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to bypass the firmware signature-verification process and install compromised BIOS firmware on an affected device.

Security readout for executives and security teams

This issue lets a local, authenticated attacker with high privileges bypass Cisco UCS C-Series BIOS firmware signature checks and install compromised BIOS firmware. The business risk is firmware integrity: malicious BIOS can persist below the operating system. Evidence in the bundle does not show internet exposure or active exploitation. Exposure is limited to Cisco UCS C-Series Rack Servers using the affected BIOS upgrade utility. The source bundle lists Cisco Unified Computing System (Managed) with unspecified versions, so asset owners must confirm exact affected models and versions against Cisco guidance. Treat as a targeted infrastructure integrity risk, not a broad remote-exploitation emergency. Prioritize systems where many workloads depend on UCS hardware, where admin access is widely shared, or where firmware change controls are weak. Mitigation focus: Check Cisco's advisory for affected models, fixed releases, and vendor-approved guidance.; Restrict local and administrative access to UCS server management hosts.; Allow BIOS upgrades only through controlled change-management windows..
