CVE-2019-1842: Cisco IOS XR Software Secure Shell Authentication Vulnerability

A vulnerability in the Secure Shell (SSH) authentication function of Cisco IOS XR Software could allow an authenticated, remote attacker to successfully log in to an affected device using two distinct usernames. The vulnerability is due to a logic error that may occur when certain sequences of actions are processed during an SSH login event on the affected device. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by initiating an SSH session to the device with a specific sequence that presents the two usernames. A successful exploit could result in logging data misrepresentation, user enumeration, or, in certain circumstances, a command authorization bypass. See the Details section for more information.

Security readout for executives and security teams

This Cisco IOS XR SSH issue can let a logged-in remote user appear as, or interact with, two different usernames during authentication. Business risk is mainly around unreliable audit trails, user discovery, and possible command authorization bypass in some circumstances. The source bundle does not show active exploitation or detailed fixed-version information. Exposure is limited to Cisco IOS XR Software devices where SSH management access is available to authenticated users. The bundle lists affected versions as unspecified, so teams must verify device releases against Cisco’s advisory before assuming exposure or non-exposure. Treat this as a medium-priority network infrastructure issue. It is not shown as actively exploited, but it can weaken audit reliability and authorization controls on critical routing platforms. Prioritize verification on internet-reachable or broadly reachable management interfaces. Mitigation focus: Review Cisco’s advisory for affected releases, fixed software, and vendor workarounds.; Restrict SSH management access to trusted administrative networks and users.; Apply least-privilege command authorization for IOS XR administrative accounts..

Improper Authorization

Improper Authorization represents a recurring weakness pattern that can create exploitable paths when design, validation, or implementation controls are missing.
