CVE-2019-1834: Cisco Aironet Series Access Points Denial of Service Vulnerability

A vulnerability in the internal packet processing of Cisco Aironet Series Access Points (APs) could allow an unauthenticated, adjacent attacker to cause a denial of service (DoS) condition on an affected AP if the switch interface where the AP is connected has port security configured. The vulnerability exists because the AP forwards some malformed wireless client packets outside of the Control and Provisioning of Wireless Access Points (CAPWAP) tunnel. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending crafted wireless packets to an affected AP. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to trigger a security violation on the adjacent switch port, which could result in a DoS condition. Note: Though the Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) score corresponds to a High Security Impact Rating (SIR), this vulnerability is considered Medium because a workaround is available and exploitation requires a specific switch configuration. There are workarounds that address this vulnerability.

Security readout for executives and security teams

A nearby attacker could disrupt an affected Cisco Aironet access point by sending malformed wireless packets, but only when the AP’s connected switch port uses port security. The impact is availability loss, not data theft. Cisco notes the CVSS score is high, but rates the issue medium because exploitation depends on a specific configuration and a workaround exists. Relevant exposure is Cisco Aironet Access Point Software 8.5(131.0) where APs connect to switch interfaces with port security configured. Environments without that software version or without the cited switch configuration appear less exposed based on the provided sources. Treat this as a targeted availability risk for wireless networks, especially sites where AP outages affect operations. It is not described as data compromise, but branch, campus, or customer-facing wireless disruption can still carry business impact. Mitigation focus: Review Cisco’s advisory for the published workaround and fixed software guidance.; Prioritize APs running Cisco Aironet Access Point Software 8.5(131.0).; Identify AP switch ports using port security and assess operational dependency..
