CVE-2019-17562: A buffer overflow vulnerability has been found in the baremetal component of Apache CloudStack.

A buffer overflow vulnerability has been found in the baremetal component of Apache CloudStack. This applies to all versions prior to 4.13.1. The vulnerability is due to the lack of validation of the mac parameter in baremetal virtual router. If you insert an arbitrary shell command into the mac parameter, v-router will process the command. For example: Normal: http://{GW}:10086/baremetal/provisiondone/{mac}, Abnormal: http://{GW}:10086/baremetal/provisiondone/#';whoami;#. Mitigation of this issue is an upgrade to Apache CloudStack 4.13.1.0 or beyond.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

Apache CloudStack deployments using affected baremetal functionality may allow an attacker to make the virtual router process malicious input as a shell command. The public record names all versions before 4.13.1.0 as affected and recommends upgrading. No CVSS score or confirmed active exploitation is provided in the supplied sources.

Executive priority

Treat this as a high-priority upgrade for any CloudStack baremetal deployment. The issue can lead to command execution in the virtual router context, but the supplied evidence does not confirm exploitation in the wild.

Technical view

The baremetal virtual router does not validate the mac parameter in a provision-completion path. Malicious shell metacharacters in that parameter can be processed by the v-router. Sources identify Apache CloudStack versions up to 4.13.0.0 as affected and 4.13.1.0 or later as the mitigation.

Likely exposure

Exposure is most likely in Apache CloudStack environments running versions before 4.13.1.0 with the baremetal component enabled and reachable by untrusted or poorly segmented network paths.

Exploitation context

The supplied sources describe arbitrary command processing through the mac parameter, but do not state active exploitation. CISA KEV status in the bundle is false, and no exploit maturity, authentication requirement, or public exploitation evidence is provided.

Researcher notes

The source title calls this a buffer overflow, while the description indicates command injection via insufficient mac parameter validation. Do not assume broader CloudStack exposure beyond versions and baremetal behavior named in the sources.

Mitigation direction

  • Upgrade Apache CloudStack to 4.13.1.0 or later.
  • Prioritize systems using the baremetal component or virtual router provisioning paths.
  • Restrict network access to baremetal virtual router management endpoints during upgrade.
  • Review Apache CloudStack vendor guidance for any deployment-specific hardening.
  • Monitor virtual router and management logs for suspicious provisioning requests.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory Apache CloudStack versions across all management and baremetal environments.
  • Confirm whether any deployment runs versions up to 4.13.0.0.
  • Determine whether the baremetal component is enabled or historically used.
  • Review access controls around virtual router provisioning interfaces.
  • Check logs for unusual mac parameter values or shell metacharacters.
