CVE-2019-1694: Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance Software and Cisco Firepower Threat Defense Software TCP Timer Handling Denial of Service Vulnerability

A vulnerability in the TCP processing engine of Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance (ASA) Software and Cisco Firepower Threat Defense (FTD) Software could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to cause an affected device to reload, resulting in a denial of service (DoS) condition. The vulnerability is due to the improper handling of TCP traffic. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a specific sequence of packets at a high rate through an affected device. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to temporarily disrupt traffic through the device while it reboots.

Security readout for executives and security teams

CVE-2019-1694 can make vulnerable Cisco ASA or FTD security appliances reboot, temporarily disrupting traffic they protect or route. It is remotely reachable and does not require authentication. The business risk is service interruption, not data theft, but impact can be high where these devices sit at internet edges or key network chokepoints. Organizations using Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance Software or Cisco Firepower Threat Defense Software may be exposed. The source bundle does not identify exact affected versions, so exposure depends on comparing deployed versions with Cisco’s advisory. Treat as high priority where ASA or FTD devices are on critical network paths. The main risk is outage from a remotely triggered reboot, so remediation should align with business continuity impact and device criticality. Mitigation focus: Inventory Cisco ASA and FTD deployments, including software versions and roles.; Review Cisco’s advisory for affected and fixed release guidance.; Prioritize updates for internet-edge and critical traffic-path devices..
