CVE-2019-15283: Cisco Webex Network Recording Player and Cisco Webex Player Arbitrary Code Execution Vulnerabilities

Multiple vulnerabilities in Cisco Webex Network Recording Player for Microsoft Windows and Cisco Webex Player for Microsoft Windows could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code on an affected system. The vulnerabilities exist due to insufficient validation of certain elements with a Webex recording stored in either the Advanced Recording Format (ARF) or the Webex Recording Format (WRF). An attacker could exploit these vulnerabilities by sending a user a malicious ARF or WRF file through a link or email attachment and persuading the user to open the file with the affected software on the local system. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary code on the affected system with the privileges of the targeted user.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

This flaw affects Cisco Webex recording playback software on Windows. A user who opens a malicious Webex recording file could have code run on their workstation with their own privileges. The main business risk is endpoint compromise through phishing-style delivery, not remote internet scanning.

Executive priority

Treat as a high-priority endpoint remediation item if Webex recording players are deployed. It is not marked as known exploited in the bundle, but phishing-delivered file execution can lead to workstation compromise.

Technical view

Cisco reports insufficient validation of elements inside ARF or WRF Webex recording files. Exploitation requires persuading a user to open a malicious file in the affected Windows player. Successful exploitation can execute arbitrary code as the targeted user. The CVSS 3.0 score is 7.8, with high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact.

Likely exposure

Exposure is most likely on Windows endpoints that have Cisco Webex Network Recording Player or Cisco Webex Player installed, especially users who receive or handle ARF or WRF meeting recordings.

Exploitation context

The source bundle does not show CISA KEV listing or active exploitation evidence. Exploitation requires local user interaction: the attacker sends or links a malicious ARF or WRF file and convinces the user to open it.

Researcher notes

Evidence is limited to the CVE metadata and Cisco advisory reference in the bundle. Do not assume affected versions beyond the named Windows Webex players. The vulnerability maps to CWE-119 and depends on malicious ARF or WRF parsing plus user interaction.

Mitigation direction

  • Check Cisco’s advisory for affected and fixed player versions.
  • Update, replace, or remove affected Webex playback software per Cisco guidance.
  • Block or quarantine unexpected ARF and WRF attachments where practical.
  • Warn users not to open unsolicited Webex recording files.
  • Limit endpoint user privileges to reduce post-exploitation impact.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory Windows systems for Cisco Webex Network Recording Player and Webex Player.
  • Compare installed versions against Cisco’s advisory guidance.
  • Review mail and web controls for ARF and WRF handling.
  • Confirm endpoint protection monitors Webex player process behavior.
  • Verify users handling recordings have least-privilege accounts.
