CVE-2019-15269: Cisco Firepower Management Center Multiple Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerabilities

Multiple vulnerabilities in the web-based management interface of Cisco Firepower Management Center (FMC) could allow an authenticated, remote attacker to conduct a cross-site scripting (XSS) attack against a user of the web-based management interface. These vulnerabilities are due to insufficient validation of user-supplied input by the web-based management interface. An attacker could exploit these vulnerabilities by persuading a user of the interface to click a crafted link. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary script code in the context of the interface or access sensitive, browser-based information.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

Cisco FMC's web management interface had multiple XSS flaws. A highly privileged logged-in attacker could trick an interface user into opening a crafted link, causing script to run in that user's browser session. Business impact is mainly browser-session data exposure and unauthorized interface actions, not direct system takeover from the CVE text.

Executive priority

Treat as a scheduled security maintenance item unless FMC is broadly reachable or administrator workflows are high risk. The flaw needs privileged access and user interaction, but it affects a security management platform, so remediation should not be ignored.

Technical view

CVE-2019-15269 is CWE-79 in Cisco Firepower Management Center's web UI from insufficient validation of user-supplied input. CVSS 3.0 is 4.8: AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N. Exploitation requires network access, high privileges, and user interaction; confidentiality and integrity impact are low, with no availability impact.

Likely exposure

Exposure is limited to organizations running Cisco Firepower Management Center with reachable web-based management access. Risk is higher where many administrators use FMC through browsers or where management interfaces are accessible beyond tightly controlled administrative networks.

Exploitation context

The provided sources do not show active exploitation, and this CVE is not listed as KEV. The attacker must already be authenticated with high privileges and must persuade a management-interface user to click a crafted link.

Researcher notes

Evidence is incomplete on affected versions and exact fixed releases in the supplied bundle. Validate against Cisco's advisory before scoping. Focus review on authenticated XSS paths in FMC web UI and on whether administrative browser sessions could expose sensitive interface data.

Mitigation direction

  • Review Cisco's advisory for affected and fixed FMC releases.
  • Upgrade FMC according to Cisco's published remediation guidance.
  • Restrict FMC web access to trusted administrative networks.
  • Limit FMC administrative privileges to required personnel only.
  • Train administrators to avoid unsolicited FMC management links.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory Cisco Firepower Management Center deployments and versions.
  • Confirm FMC web interfaces are not broadly reachable.
  • Check whether deployed versions are covered by Cisco's advisory.
  • Verify administrative accounts are limited and reviewed.
  • Review browser-session protections and admin phishing controls.
