CVE-2019-15240: Cisco SPA100 Series Analog Telephone Adapters Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities

Multiple vulnerabilities in Cisco SPA100 Series Analog Telephone Adapters (ATAs) could allow an authenticated, adjacent attacker to execute arbitrary code with elevated privileges. The vulnerabilities are due to improper validation of user-supplied input to the web-based management interface. An attacker could exploit these vulnerabilities by authenticating to the web-based management interface and sending crafted requests to an affected device. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary code with elevated privileges. Note: The web-based management interface is enabled by default.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

This flaw affects Cisco SPA100 Series analog telephone adapters, including the SPA112 listed in the bundle. A logged-in attacker on an adjacent network could abuse the default-enabled web management interface to run code with elevated privileges, potentially taking control of the device.

Executive priority

Treat as a high-priority remediation item for any remaining Cisco SPA100 deployments, especially in voice, branch, or shared network environments. The business risk is device takeover rather than broad unauthenticated internet exploitation.

Technical view

CVE-2019-15240 is a high-severity input validation flaw in the Cisco SPA100 web-based management interface. It requires adjacent network access and low privileges, but no user interaction. Successful exploitation can provide high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact through elevated arbitrary code execution.

Likely exposure

Exposure is most likely where Cisco SPA112 or other Cisco SPA100 Series ATAs remain deployed and their web management interface is reachable from local or adjacent networks. The bundle does not specify affected firmware versions.

Exploitation context

The provided sources do not show CISA KEV listing or confirmed active exploitation. Exploitation requires authentication to the management interface and adjacent network reachability, which lowers internet-scale risk but remains serious for shared networks or compromised credentials.

Researcher notes

Key constraints are authentication and adjacent attack vector. The source bundle confirms improper input validation and elevated code execution impact, but does not provide affected version ranges, exploit evidence, or specific fixed releases.

Mitigation direction

  • Inventory Cisco SPA112 and SPA100 Series ATA devices.
  • Review Cisco's advisory for fixed software or product guidance.
  • Restrict web management access to trusted administration networks.
  • Disable or tightly limit the web management interface if operationally unnecessary.
  • Rotate administrative credentials for exposed or shared ATA management accounts.

Validation and detection

  • Confirm whether Cisco SPA112 or SPA100 Series ATAs are deployed.
  • Check whether the web management interface is enabled and reachable.
  • Compare installed software or firmware against Cisco advisory guidance.
  • Review access controls around local and adjacent management networks.
  • Look for unexpected authenticated management activity on affected devices.
