In the Zoom Client through 4.4.4 and RingCentral 7.0.136380.0312 on macOS, remote attackers can force a user to join a video call with the video camera active. This occurs because any web site can interact with the Zoom web server on localhost port 19421 or 19424. NOTE: a machine remains vulnerable if the Zoom Client was installed in the past and then uninstalled. Blocking exploitation requires additional steps, such as the ZDisableVideo preference and/or killing the web server, deleting the ~/.zoomus directory, and creating a ~/.zoomus plain file.

Security readout for executives and security teams

This issue affected macOS Zoom and RingCentral clients by allowing a website to trigger joining a video call with the camera active. The risk is privacy exposure and loss of user control. The CVE also notes systems could remain exposed after uninstall because a local Zoom web server could persist. Exposure is limited to macOS endpoints that currently have, or previously had, the affected Zoom/RingCentral client behavior. Organizations with unmanaged Macs, BYOD, or legacy conferencing installs have higher residual risk because uninstall alone may not remove the local web server condition. Prioritize remediation for executive, legal, healthcare, support, and customer-facing Macs where unintended camera activation creates privacy, trust, and compliance concerns. This is not presented as ransomware-class risk, but it has clear reputational and privacy impact. Mitigation focus: Identify macOS endpoints with affected Zoom or RingCentral client versions.; Review Zoom and RingCentral vendor guidance for current remediation instructions.; Set the ZDisableVideo preference where applicable..
