CVE-2019-11708: Insufficient vetting of parameters passed with the Prompt:Open IPC message between child and parent process...

Insufficient vetting of parameters passed with the Prompt:Open IPC message between child and parent processes can result in the non-sandboxed parent process opening web content chosen by a compromised child process. When combined with additional vulnerabilities this could result in executing arbitrary code on the user's computer. This vulnerability affects Firefox ESR < 60.7.2, Firefox < 67.0.4, and Thunderbird < 60.7.2.

Security readout for executives and security teams

CVE-2019-11708 is a critical Mozilla flaw where a compromised browser child process could cause the unsandboxed parent process to open attacker-chosen web content. Mozilla says chaining it with other vulnerabilities could lead to code execution on the user’s computer. Exposure is most likely on endpoints or managed images still running the affected Firefox, Firefox ESR, or Thunderbird versions. Modern fully updated installations should not be affected by the versions named in the source bundle. High priority for any organization with legacy Mozilla deployments. Because CISA marks this as known exploited and the potential impact includes arbitrary code execution when chained, affected systems should be remediated quickly and tracked to closure. Mitigation focus: Upgrade Firefox to 67.0.4 or later, and Firefox ESR to 60.7.2 or later.; Upgrade Thunderbird to 60.7.2 or later where installed.; Remove unsupported legacy Mozilla versions from managed endpoints..
