CVE-2019-11045: DirectoryIterator class silently truncates after a null byte

In PHP versions 7.2.x below 7.2.26, 7.3.x below 7.3.13 and 7.4.0, PHP DirectoryIterator class accepts filenames with embedded \0 byte and treats them as terminating at that byte. This could lead to security vulnerabilities, e.g. in applications checking paths that the code is allowed to access.

Security readout for executives and security teams

This is a low-severity PHP flaw where DirectoryIterator could treat part of a filename after a null byte as if it did not exist. The business risk is mainly accidental access-control bypass in custom PHP applications that validate allowed paths before using DirectoryIterator. Exposure is most plausible in PHP applications running the affected versions and using DirectoryIterator with attacker-influenced filenames or paths. Systems using patched PHP packages from distribution vendors are less likely exposed. The sources do not identify a broad product-specific exploitation pattern. Treat this as routine patch hygiene unless the organization has custom PHP code that validates file paths from users. It is not supported by the supplied sources as actively exploited, but it can weaken file access controls in specific applications. Mitigation focus: Upgrade PHP beyond the affected versions named in the CVE record.; Apply relevant Debian, Fedora, Ubuntu, openSUSE, or vendor security packages.; Review application path validation before DirectoryIterator use..
