CVE-2019-1034: Microsoft Word Remote Code Execution Vulnerability

A remote code execution vulnerability exists in Microsoft Word software when it fails to properly handle objects in memory. An attacker who successfully exploited the vulnerability could use a specially crafted file to perform actions in the security context of the current user. For example, the file could then take actions on behalf of the logged-on user with the same permissions as the current user. To exploit the vulnerability, a user must open a specially crafted file with an affected version of Microsoft Word software. In an email attack scenario, an attacker could exploit the vulnerability by sending the specially crafted file to the user and convincing the user to open the file. In a web-based attack scenario, an attacker could host a website (or leverage a compromised website that accepts or hosts user-provided content) that contains a specially crafted file that is designed to exploit the vulnerability. However, an attacker would have no way to force the user to visit the website. Instead, an attacker would have to convince the user to click a link, typically by way of an enticement in an email or Instant Messenger message, and then convince the user to open the specially crafted file. The security update addresses the vulnerability by correcting how Microsoft Word handles files in memory.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2019-1034 is a Microsoft Word remote code execution issue. A malicious document could run actions as the logged-in user if opened in an affected product. The public bundle identifies a Microsoft security update, but does not provide CVSS, official severity, or evidence of active exploitation.

Executive priority

Treat as a high-priority patching item for document-heavy environments. The attack needs user interaction, but malicious Office documents are a common delivery path and successful exploitation runs with the victim's permissions.

Technical view

Microsoft describes improper handling of objects in memory in Word. Exploitation requires a specially crafted file opened by a user with an affected Word or Office component. Listed affected products include Word, Office, Office for Mac, Office 365 ProPlus, Office Web Apps, Office Online Server, and SharePoint versions.

Likely exposure

Exposure is likely where listed Microsoft Office, Word, SharePoint, Office Web Apps, or Office Online Server versions remain unpatched, especially in environments receiving external documents by email or web workflows.

Exploitation context

The cited description supports phishing or web lure scenarios where a user is convinced to open a crafted file. The bundle marks KEV false and provides no cited evidence of active exploitation.

Researcher notes

Evidence is limited to Microsoft/CVE descriptions. No CVSS, CWE, exploit-in-the-wild claim, or technical root-cause detail is provided in the bundle. Avoid assuming affected builds beyond the listed products and versions.

Mitigation direction

  • Apply the Microsoft security update for CVE-2019-1034 from MSRC.
  • Inventory affected Word, Office, SharePoint, Office Web Apps, and Office Online Server versions.
  • Prioritize systems and users handling external or untrusted documents.
  • Confirm unsupported legacy Office and SharePoint deployments have a remediation plan.
  • Check current Microsoft guidance for product-specific update details.

Validation and detection

  • Verify installed Office, Word, SharePoint, and Office server build levels against MSRC guidance.
  • Confirm patch deployment success across Windows, Mac, and server-side Office components.
  • Review email and web document handling controls for high-risk user groups.
  • Check whether legacy Office 2010 or SharePoint 2010 assets still exist.
  • Validate vulnerability scanner detections against actual installed product versions.
