CVE-2018-9981: This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on vulnerable installations of Foxit R...

This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on vulnerable installations of Foxit Reader 9.0.0.29935. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file. The specific flaw exists within the parsing of U3D files. The issue results from the lack of proper initialization of a pointer prior to accessing it. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code under the context of the current process. Was ZDI-CAN-5431.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2018-9981 is a Foxit Reader flaw that can let an attacker run code if a user opens a malicious file or visits a malicious page. The business risk is workstation compromise through document-based social engineering, not automatic network-wide exploitation.

Executive priority

Prioritize remediation where Foxit Reader is used on employee workstations that receive external documents. Treat as high priority, but evidence provided does not support active exploitation or wormable behavior.

Technical view

The flaw affects Foxit Reader 9.0.0.29935 in U3D file parsing. Sources describe an improperly initialized pointer before access, mapped to CWE-824, enabling arbitrary code execution in the current process context. User interaction is required.

Likely exposure

Exposure is most likely on endpoints still running Foxit Reader 9.0.0.29935 and handling PDF or U3D content from email, web downloads, or external parties.

Exploitation context

The source bundle does not show CISA KEV listing or cited active exploitation. Exploitation requires persuading a user to visit a malicious page or open a malicious file.

Researcher notes

ZDI identifies this as ZDI-18-379 and ZDI-CAN-5431. The provided data lacks CVSS details and does not name a fixed version, so validation should rely on Foxit’s bulletin and local software inventory.

Mitigation direction

  • Inventory endpoints for Foxit Reader 9.0.0.29935.
  • Check Foxit security bulletins for the vendor-supported remediation.
  • Update or remove affected Foxit Reader installations according to vendor guidance.
  • Limit handling of untrusted PDF or U3D content until remediated.
  • Use email and web controls to reduce malicious document delivery.

Validation and detection

  • Confirm no managed endpoints report Foxit Reader 9.0.0.29935.
  • Verify remediation against Foxit’s published security bulletin.
  • Review document-handling systems for vulnerable Foxit Reader use.
  • Check security telemetry for suspicious Foxit Reader crashes or alerts.
  • Document any exceptions with compensating controls and owner.
