CVE-2018-9978: This vulnerability allows remote attackers to disclose sensitive information on vulnerable installations of...

This vulnerability allows remote attackers to disclose sensitive information on vulnerable installations of Foxit Reader 9.0.0.29935. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file. The specific flaw exists within the parsing of U3D files. The issue results from the lack of proper validation of user-supplied data, which can result in a read past the end of an allocated object. An attacker can leverage this in conjunction with other vulnerabilities to execute code in the context of the context process. Was ZDI-CAN-5428.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2018-9978 affects Foxit Reader 9.0.0.29935. A victim must open a malicious file or visit a malicious page. The flaw can disclose sensitive information and may help an attacker chain toward code execution with other vulnerabilities.

Executive priority

Treat this as a targeted endpoint software risk, not an internet-facing emergency. Prioritize if Foxit Reader 9.0.0.29935 is broadly deployed or used for external documents.

Technical view

The vulnerability is an out-of-bounds read, CWE-125, in Foxit Reader U3D file parsing. The parser lacks proper validation of user-supplied data, allowing reads past an allocated object. Public sources do not provide CVSS, confirmed fixed versions, or active exploitation evidence.

Likely exposure

Exposure is limited to systems running Foxit Reader 9.0.0.29935, especially where users open untrusted documents or browse attacker-controlled content.

Exploitation context

The sources state user interaction is required. The target must open a malicious file or visit a malicious page. KEV status is false, and the bundle provides no cited evidence of active exploitation.

Researcher notes

Key uncertainty remains: the supplied sources do not include CVSS metrics, patch mapping, proof-of-concept status, or exploitation telemetry. Analysis should stay scoped to Foxit Reader 9.0.0.29935 and U3D parsing.

Mitigation direction

  • Inventory Foxit Reader installations and identify version 9.0.0.29935.
  • Check Foxit security bulletins for vendor-fixed versions and update accordingly.
  • Remove or replace vulnerable installations where business use is unnecessary.
  • Reduce exposure to untrusted documents and web content through existing email and web controls.

Validation and detection

  • Confirm whether Foxit Reader 9.0.0.29935 exists in endpoint inventory.
  • Verify upgraded systems no longer report the affected version.
  • Review software deployment records for Foxit Reader update coverage.
  • Check user-facing document handling workflows for untrusted file exposure.
