CVE-2018-9972: This vulnerability allows remote attackers to disclose sensitive information on vulnerable installations of...

This vulnerability allows remote attackers to disclose sensitive information on vulnerable installations of Foxit Reader 9.0.1.1049. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file. The specific flaw exists within ConvertToPDF_x86.dll. The issue results from the lack of proper validation of user-supplied data, which can result in a read past the end of an allocated object. An attacker can leverage this in conjunction with other vulnerabilities to execute arbitrary code in the context of the current process. Was ZDI-CAN-5755.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

Foxit Reader 9.0.1.1049 has a flaw that can expose sensitive process memory when a user opens a malicious file or visits a malicious page. The source says attackers may chain it with other bugs for code execution, but it does not show standalone compromise.

Executive priority

Treat as a targeted workstation exposure issue. Prioritize remediation where affected Foxit Reader versions exist on users likely to receive external documents.

Technical view

CVE-2018-9972 is a CWE-125 out-of-bounds read in ConvertToPDF_x86.dll. The flaw stems from insufficient validation of user-supplied data, causing reads past an allocated object. Exploitation requires user interaction and is described as useful in vulnerability chaining.

Likely exposure

Exposure is limited to installations of Foxit Reader 9.0.1.1049, especially where users open PDFs or web content from email, downloads, or external sources.

Exploitation context

The bundle does not indicate CISA KEV listing or active exploitation. Exploitation requires convincing a user to open malicious content or visit a malicious page.

Researcher notes

Evidence is limited to CVE and ZDI-style advisory details. No CVSS vector, patch version, exploit-in-the-wild evidence, or standalone code execution path is provided in the bundle.

Mitigation direction

  • Inventory endpoints for Foxit Reader 9.0.1.1049.
  • Check Foxit security bulletins for the vendor-supported update or mitigation.
  • Upgrade or replace affected Foxit Reader installations per vendor guidance.
  • Reduce handling of untrusted PDFs on affected systems until remediated.

Validation and detection

  • Confirm Foxit Reader versions across managed endpoints.
  • Review software inventory for Foxit Reader 9.0.1.1049 specifically.
  • Check whether affected systems process external PDFs or browser-delivered files.
  • Verify remediation by confirming the affected version is no longer present.
