CVE-2018-9969: This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on vulnerable installations of Foxit R...

This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on vulnerable installations of Foxit Reader 9.0.1.1049. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file. The specific flaw exists within the XFA boundItem method of Button elements. The issue results from the lack of validating the existence of an object prior to performing operations on the object. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code under the context of the current process. Was ZDI-CAN-5579.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2018-9969 is a remote code execution issue in Foxit Reader 9.0.1.1049. A victim must open a malicious file or visit a malicious page. Successful exploitation could run attacker-controlled code with the user’s privileges. The source bundle does not provide CVSS scoring or confirmed active exploitation.

Executive priority

Treat this as a high-priority legacy software risk if Foxit Reader 9.0.1.1049 is present. The business urgency comes from code execution after common user actions, not from confirmed active exploitation.

Technical view

The flaw is in the XFA boundItem method of Button elements in Foxit Reader 9.0.1.1049. It stems from failing to validate an object exists before operating on it, mapped to CWE-416. ZDI tracked it as ZDI-CAN-5579 and states exploitation can execute code in the current process context.

Likely exposure

Exposure is likely limited to environments with Foxit Reader 9.0.1.1049 installed, especially where users open external PDFs or browse content that can invoke Foxit Reader. The provided sources do not identify other affected versions, platforms, or Foxit products.

Exploitation context

The sources describe remote exploitation requiring user interaction through a malicious page or file. CISA KEV status is false in the bundle, and no provided source confirms active exploitation in the wild.

Researcher notes

Key evidence is limited but consistent: affected product and version, vulnerable XFA Button boundItem behavior, missing object-existence validation, CWE-416 classification, and user-interaction requirement. No CVSS vector, exploit telemetry, or specific fixed release is included in the bundle.

Mitigation direction

  • Inventory endpoints for Foxit Reader 9.0.1.1049.
  • Review Foxit security bulletins for vendor-fixed versions and upgrade guidance.
  • Reduce exposure by restricting untrusted PDF handling where operationally feasible.
  • Use endpoint controls to limit unnecessary Foxit Reader child-process activity.
  • Educate users to avoid unexpected PDFs or document links.

Validation and detection

  • Confirm installed Foxit Reader versions across managed endpoints.
  • Verify whether Foxit Reader 9.0.1.1049 remains in software deployment tools.
  • Check whether browsers or email clients invoke Foxit Reader for PDFs.
  • Review endpoint telemetry for Foxit Reader crashes or suspicious process behavior.
  • Document any compensating controls for systems that cannot be upgraded.
