CVE-2018-9968: This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on vulnerable installations of Foxit R...

This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on vulnerable installations of Foxit Reader 9.0.1.1049. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file. The specific flaw exists within the handling of Keystroke actions of TextBox objects. The issue results from the lack of validating the existence of an object prior to performing operations on the object. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code under the context of the current process. Was ZDI-CAN-5572.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2018-9968 is a remote code execution flaw in Foxit Reader 9.0.1.1049. An attacker would need a user to open a malicious file or visit a malicious page. Successful exploitation could run code with the same rights as the Foxit Reader process.

Executive priority

Prioritize remediation where Foxit Reader 9.0.1.1049 exists on user workstations. The business risk is document-driven compromise through normal user activity, but the source bundle does not show active exploitation.

Technical view

The flaw is in Foxit Reader handling of Keystroke actions for TextBox objects. The source describes missing validation that an object exists before operations are performed, mapped to CWE-416. ZDI tracked it as ZDI-CAN-5572 / ZDI-18-352.

Likely exposure

Exposure is limited to systems running Foxit Reader 9.0.1.1049. Risk is higher where users open external documents or browse untrusted pages. The bundle does not identify other Foxit products or versions as affected.

Exploitation context

The source states exploitation requires user interaction. CISA KEV status is false, and the bundle provides no evidence of active exploitation or public exploit availability. Treat it as a credible RCE risk, not a confirmed in-the-wild campaign.

Researcher notes

Key unknowns are CVSS score, fixed version, and exploit maturity. The provided evidence supports RCE with user interaction in one Foxit Reader version and a CWE-416 classification, but does not support broader affected-version claims.

Mitigation direction

  • Inventory endpoints for Foxit Reader 9.0.1.1049.
  • Check Foxit security bulletins for vendor-approved fixed versions or guidance.
  • Upgrade or remove vulnerable installations according to Foxit guidance.
  • Limit opening untrusted files until remediation is complete.
  • Apply least-privilege controls for users running document readers.

Validation and detection

  • Confirm installed Foxit Reader version on managed endpoints.
  • Verify whether any systems still report version 9.0.1.1049.
  • Review Foxit and ZDI advisories for remediation details.
  • Confirm patched or replacement versions are deployed.
  • Check endpoint telemetry for suspicious Foxit Reader crashes or abnormal child processes.
