CVE-2018-9966: This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on vulnerable installations of Foxit R...

This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on vulnerable installations of Foxit Reader 9.0.1.1049. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file. The specific flaw exists within the handling of Calculate actions of TextBox objects. The issue results from the lack of validating the existence of an object prior to performing operations on the object. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code under the context of the current process. Was ZDI-CAN-5570.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2018-9966 is a remote code execution flaw in Foxit Reader 9.0.1.1049. A user must open a malicious PDF-like file or visit a malicious page. Successful exploitation could run attacker-controlled code with the same privileges as the user.

Executive priority

Prioritize remediation for endpoints that process external documents. This is an older vulnerability, but remote code execution in a document reader remains business-relevant if vulnerable versions persist.

Technical view

The flaw is in Foxit Reader handling of Calculate actions for TextBox objects. The issue is described as missing validation that an object exists before operations are performed on it, allowing code execution in the current process context.

Likely exposure

Exposure is most likely where Foxit Reader 9.0.1.1049 remains installed, especially on workstations handling external documents, email attachments, downloads, or web-delivered files.

Exploitation context

The provided sources do not show CISA KEV listing or active exploitation. Exploitation requires user interaction: opening a malicious file or visiting a malicious page.

Researcher notes

Evidence identifies Foxit Reader 9.0.1.1049 and object-lifetime validation failure in TextBox Calculate action handling. The bundle does not provide CVSS, CWE, fixed version details, or evidence of exploitation in the wild.

Mitigation direction

  • Inventory endpoints for Foxit Reader 9.0.1.1049.
  • Review Foxit security bulletins for fixed versions and vendor guidance.
  • Update or remove vulnerable Foxit Reader installations.
  • Limit handling of untrusted PDF files until remediation is complete.
  • Use least-privilege user accounts for document-handling workstations.

Validation and detection

  • Confirm installed Foxit Reader versions across managed endpoints.
  • Check whether Foxit Reader 9.0.1.1049 is present.
  • Verify remediation against Foxit's security bulletin guidance.
  • Review endpoint telemetry for suspicious Foxit Reader child processes.
  • Confirm users cannot automatically open untrusted documents in Foxit Reader.
