CVE-2018-9960: This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on vulnerable installations of Foxit R...

This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on vulnerable installations of Foxit Reader 9.0.1.1049. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file. The specific flaw exists within the parsing of the textColor Field attribute. The issue results from the lack of validating the existence of an object prior to performing operations on the object. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code under the context of the current process. Was ZDI-CAN-5433.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2018-9960 is a remote code execution flaw in Foxit Reader 9.0.1.1049. A victim must open a malicious file or visit a malicious page. If successful, attacker-controlled code runs with the current user's permissions, making phishing and document-delivery scenarios the main business concern.

Executive priority

Treat as a high-priority legacy endpoint remediation item, not an emergency active-exploitation event based on the provided evidence. Prioritize systems handling external documents or high-risk user groups.

Technical view

The flaw is in parsing the textColor Field attribute. The source describes missing validation that an object exists before operations are performed on it, mapped to CWE-416. Successful exploitation can execute arbitrary code in the current process. The bundle names Foxit Reader 9.0.1.1049 as affected.

Likely exposure

Exposure is most likely on endpoints still running Foxit Reader 9.0.1.1049, especially where users open external PDFs or browse untrusted content. The source bundle does not identify other versions or products as affected.

Exploitation context

User interaction is required. The cited description says the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file. There is no KEV listing and no provided source evidence of active exploitation.

Researcher notes

ZDI tracked this as ZDI-CAN-5433 and ZDI-18-344. The public bundle gives root-cause and impact at a high level but does not include CVSS, exploit maturity, or a specific fixed release in the provided data.

Mitigation direction

  • Identify and prioritize Foxit Reader 9.0.1.1049 installations.
  • Check Foxit security bulletins for the vendor-supported fixed version or guidance.
  • Update or replace affected Foxit Reader installations following vendor guidance.
  • Limit use of affected Reader for untrusted files until remediation is complete.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory endpoint software versions for Foxit Reader 9.0.1.1049.
  • Review vulnerability scanner results for CVE-2018-9960 coverage.
  • Confirm remediated hosts no longer report the affected version.
  • Document any exceptions and compensating controls for remaining installations.
