CVE-2018-9959: This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on vulnerable installations of Foxit R...

This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on vulnerable installations of Foxit Reader 9.0.1.1049. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file. The specific flaw exists within the parsing of the pageNum document attribute. The issue results from the lack of validating the existence of an object prior to performing operations on the object. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code under the context of the current process. Was ZDI-CAN-5432.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2018-9959 is a remote code execution issue in Foxit Reader 9.0.1.1049. An attacker would need a user to open a malicious file or visit a malicious page. Successful exploitation could run code as the current user, making exposed endpoints a priority for upgrade or removal.

Executive priority

Treat this as a high-priority endpoint software risk where Foxit Reader 9.0.1.1049 remains installed. The business urgency is driven by possible code execution after normal user document-handling behavior, not by confirmed active exploitation in the supplied sources.

Technical view

The flaw is in Foxit Reader parsing of the pageNum document attribute. The source describes missing validation of an object before operations are performed, mapped to CWE-416. ZDI tracked it as ZDI-CAN-5432 and ZDI-18-343. Impact is arbitrary code execution in the current process context.

Likely exposure

Exposure is likely limited to endpoints running Foxit Reader 9.0.1.1049, especially users who open external PDFs or browse untrusted content. The source bundle does not prove broader Foxit product or version exposure.

Exploitation context

The provided sources do not show active exploitation, and the CVE is not listed as KEV. Exploitation requires user interaction: the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file.

Researcher notes

Focus validation on exact product/version exposure and advisory mapping. The root issue is unsafe pageNum attribute parsing with object validation failure. Do not assume exploit availability, patched versions, or additional affected products beyond the supplied references.

Mitigation direction

  • Inventory endpoints for Foxit Reader 9.0.1.1049.
  • Check Foxit security bulletins for the vendor-approved update or mitigation.
  • Upgrade or remove affected Foxit Reader installations following vendor guidance.
  • Reduce user exposure to untrusted PDFs and unsolicited links.

Validation and detection

  • Confirm installed Foxit Reader versions across managed endpoints.
  • Verify no system remains on Foxit Reader 9.0.1.1049.
  • Review Foxit advisory coverage for the deployed version.
  • Check security tools for alerts involving malicious PDF delivery.
