CVE-2018-9954: This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on vulnerable installations of Foxit R...

This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on vulnerable installations of Foxit Reader 9.0.1.1049. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file. The specific flaw exists within the handling of XFA Button elements. When setting the y attribute, the process does not properly validate the existence of an object prior to performing operations on the object. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code under the context of the current process. Was ZDI-CAN-5529.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2018-9954 is a Foxit Reader flaw that can let an attacker run code if a user opens a malicious file or visits a malicious page. The affected version named in the source bundle is Foxit Reader 9.0.1.1049. No active exploitation evidence is provided.

Executive priority

Treat this as a high-priority legacy desktop software risk, especially for users handling external documents. Prioritize inventory and remediation, but do not classify it as known exploited based on the supplied evidence.

Technical view

The flaw is in Foxit Reader handling of XFA Button elements. Setting the y attribute can trigger operations on a missing object, described as CWE-416 use-after-free behavior, enabling code execution in the current process. User interaction is required.

Likely exposure

Exposure is likely limited to environments with Foxit Reader 9.0.1.1049 or unverified older deployments. Risk is higher where users routinely open external PDFs or browse untrusted sites with Foxit-associated content.

Exploitation context

The provided sources describe remote code execution requiring the target to open a malicious file or visit a malicious page. CISA KEV status is false in the bundle, and no cited source here confirms active exploitation.

Researcher notes

Evidence is clear on affected product, vulnerable version, user interaction, and XFA Button y attribute object-lifetime issue. Evidence is incomplete for CVSS scoring, fixed versions, exploit availability, and active exploitation in the supplied bundle.

Mitigation direction

  • Inventory endpoints for Foxit Reader 9.0.1.1049.
  • Review Foxit security bulletins for the vendor-supported upgrade path.
  • Upgrade or remove vulnerable Foxit Reader installations.
  • Limit exposure to unsolicited PDFs and untrusted links.
  • Use least privilege and application controls to reduce execution impact.

Validation and detection

  • Confirm installed Foxit Reader versions across managed endpoints.
  • Check software inventory for version 9.0.1.1049 specifically.
  • Review EDR telemetry for suspicious Foxit Reader child processes.
  • Verify that remediated systems no longer run the affected version.
  • Document any exception where Foxit cannot be upgraded or removed.
