CVE-2018-9953: This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on vulnerable installations of Foxit R...

This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on vulnerable installations of Foxit Reader 9.0.1.1049. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file. The specific flaw exists within the XFA resolveNodes method of Button elements. The issue results from the lack of validating the existence of an object prior to performing operations on the object. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code under the context of the current process. Was ZDI-CAN-5528.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2018-9953 is a remote code execution issue in Foxit Reader 9.0.1.1049. A user must open a malicious file or visit a malicious page. If exploited, attacker code can run as the current user, making phishing and document delivery the main business concern.

Executive priority

Treat this as a high-priority workstation risk if legacy Foxit Reader is present. The issue enables code execution through user-driven document interaction, but urgency depends on whether version 9.0.1.1049 remains deployed.

Technical view

The flaw is in the XFA resolveNodes method for Button elements. The source describes missing validation before operating on an object, mapped to CWE-416. Successful exploitation can execute arbitrary code in the current Foxit Reader process after user interaction.

Likely exposure

Exposure is most likely on endpoints still running Foxit Reader 9.0.1.1049, especially where users handle external PDFs or browser-delivered documents. The source bundle does not identify other affected Foxit products or versions.

Exploitation context

The provided sources state exploitation requires the target to open a malicious file or visit a malicious page. KEV status is false, and no cited source in the bundle confirms active exploitation.

Researcher notes

Evidence is specific but incomplete: the bundle names Foxit Reader 9.0.1.1049, XFA Button resolveNodes, CWE-416, and ZDI-CAN-5528, but provides no CVSS vector, confirmed exploit activity, or exact fixed version.

Mitigation direction

  • Inventory endpoints for Foxit Reader 9.0.1.1049.
  • Check Foxit security bulletins for vendor-approved update guidance.
  • Prioritize remediation for users handling external documents.
  • Restrict use of the affected reader until remediated.
  • Apply least privilege and endpoint controls around document readers.

Validation and detection

  • Confirm installed Foxit Reader versions across managed endpoints.
  • Verify vulnerable version 9.0.1.1049 is removed or updated.
  • Review vulnerability scanner results for this CVE.
  • Check software deployment records for legacy Foxit packages.
  • Monitor endpoint telemetry for suspicious Foxit Reader crashes or child processes.
