CVE-2018-8040: Pages that are rendered using the ESI plugin can have access to the cookie header when the plugin is config...

Pages that are rendered using the ESI plugin can have access to the cookie header when the plugin is configured not to allow access. This affects Apache Traffic Server (ATS) versions 6.0.0 to 6.2.2 and 7.0.0 to 7.1.3. To resolve this issue users running 6.x should upgrade to 6.2.3 or later versions and 7.x users should upgrade to 7.1.4 or later versions.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Apache Traffic Server could let pages rendered through its ESI plugin see the Cookie header even when configuration was meant to block that access. If exposed, sensitive session or identity cookies could be disclosed to page logic that should not receive them. Exposure is limited to deployments running affected Apache Traffic Server versions with the ESI plugin rendering pages and configured to restrict Cookie header access. Organizations not using ATS or not using the ESI plugin are less likely to be affected based on the provided sources. Prioritize remediation where ATS sits in front of authenticated applications or handles session cookies. The issue is configuration-specific and has no cited active exploitation, but cookie exposure can create material account or privacy risk. Mitigation focus: Upgrade ATS 6.x deployments to 6.2.3 or later.; Upgrade ATS 7.x deployments to 7.1.4 or later.; Identify any ATS instances using the ESI plugin..
